Hair loss is a prevalent issue affecting hundreds of thousands of residents in the UAE, with experts warning that losing more than 75 hair strands daily could be a sign of hair loss and underlying health problems. Dr C Vijay Krishna, a specialist at Thumbay University Hospital, explains that losing 50-75 strands of hair per day is considered normal, but an increase to 75-100 strands may indicate an issue. Dr Krishna notes that increased hair loss is often noticed while combing or showering.

Dr Iman Salah Youssef El-Habyan, a dermatology specialist at Zulekha Hospital Dubai, highlights that nearly 66 percent of men in the UAE suffer from hair loss, with the alarming trend of men under 30 experiencing this issue. In women, hair loss typically starts around puberty and worsens over time. Dr Iman emphasizes the natural cycle of hair growth, rest, and shedding, noting that accelerated shedding can lead to noticeable thinning and bald spots.

Causes of hair loss vary across different age groups in the UAE, with children commonly experiencing hair loss due to infections, vitamin deficiencies, and autoimmune conditions like alopecia areata. Conversely, adults often face hair loss due to factors such as stress, genetics (androgenic alopecia), internal medical issues like thyroid disorders and diabetes, lifestyle choices, and recent illnesses. Dr Krishna mentions seeing over 100 patients monthly with complaints of hair fall, breakage, and other related issues, indicating a rise in individuals seeking treatment for hair loss concerns.

Dr Iman points out that social and psychological factors contribute to hair loss concerns, with 82 percent of patients attributing these concerns as the main cause in her clinic. Treatment options for hair loss depend on the underlying cause, with nutritional deficiencies often corrected through dietary changes or supplements. Common deficiencies like iron, vitamin D, and biotin can be restored with supplementation tailored to individual needs. Genetic hair loss treatments may include minoxidil, finasteride, stem cell therapy, and hair transplants.

In addition to medical treatments, alternative approaches for controlling hair loss include reducing stress through activities like mild exercise, such as running or yoga. These activities have been shown to improve overall well-being and reduce stress levels, which may in turn help in managing hair loss. Good chemicals like oxytocin and endorphins can boost blood circulation to the scalp, promoting healthy hair growth. Overall, addressing the underlying causes of hair loss and incorporating lifestyle changes can greatly impact the prevention and management of this common issue in the UAE.
