Muscat: The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology today celebrated the first Logistics Day. The event coincided with the start of the second edition of Oman Ports Conference, titled “Oman on the Logistics Performance Index”. The conference has been organised in cooperation with Oman Logistics Association.

Logistics Day celebration ceremony was held under the auspices of HH Sayyid Harib Thuwaini Al Said, Assistant Secretary General of the Council of Ministers for Conferences.

The celebration began with a documentary titled “The Sultanate of Oman’s March in Establishing the Logistics System”. The documentary featured the development of the national logistics sector and outlined determinants of future growth in accordance with the priorities of Oman Vision 2040.

Eng. Said Hamoud Al Maawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, said that the Logistics Day commemorates the day Omani ship “Sultanah” docked on the shores of the United States—way back on 30 April 1840.

The minister pointed out that the allocation of Logistics Day reflects the significance attached to domestic development across various relevant sectors. He added that the logistics sector constitutes one of the main pillars in enhancing the economy through a comprehensive vision that accommodates present enablers and future requirements of growth.

The celebration saw the announcement of 6 initiatives to be implemented in 2024 within the logistics sector:

· Free transportation for students of colleges and universities via the public transport network in the cities of Muscat and Salalah for two years;

· Programmes of the “Public Transport Open Day”. The programmes, meant to spread public awareness, target citizens;

· An “Experiences Programme” to showcase real-life situations and practices.

· An introductory programme about the logistics sector—to be implemented in ports of the governorates.

· An initiative to empower small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the logistics sector,

· An initiative to provide transport services for guests of the Sultanate of Oman.

The event also saw the launch of the third phase of workshops and clinics aimed to attract investment in the logistics sector. Winners of the “Best Practices Award in the logistics sector” were announced. They were felicitated in appreciation for their excellence, as a means to motivate operators in the logistics sector.
