The latest research by Bayt.com and YouGov has identified the top hiring sectors in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region, with advertising/marketing/public relations, healthcare/medical services, military/defence/police, and banking/finance emerging as the most sought-after industries. The survey aimed to understand the preferences of fresh graduates in the region and shed light on the challenges they face when looking for a job.

The survey revealed that advertising/marketing/public relations, followed by it/internet/e-commerce and business consultancy, are the most appealing industries to fresh graduates from a career perspective. With many industries in the Mena region offering new job opportunities for fresh graduates, the majority of respondents expressed satisfaction with the quality of higher education they received. Industry preferences vary among graduates, with some industries attracting more fresh graduates due to lower salary expectations or the ability to handle challenges.

In terms of essential skills for excelling in the workplace, respondents highlighted computer skills, interpersonal/team skills, and communication skills as the most important. Most respondents rated their abilities highly across various skills, including interpersonal/team playing skills, communication skills, and flexibility/adaptability to change. The survey also explored the challenges faced by fresh graduates in finding a job, with many citing a lack of knowledge on effective job search strategies.

When it comes to job preferences, the nature of the job or passion for the role emerged as the most critical factor for Mena respondents when selecting a job. Additionally, a significant percentage of fresh graduates expect to be offered a basic salary and personal medical insurance in their first job. If unable to find a job in their target industry, a majority of respondents expressed their willingness to continue their job search until they find the ideal role, while others would consider exploring other industries.

Overall, the survey provides valuable insights into the recruitment efforts needed to align with the aspirations of recent graduates in the Mena region. It showcases the increasing openness among employers to hire fresh graduates, reflecting a shift in the skills demanded in the digital age. The data collected for the survey included responses from various countries in the Mena region, highlighting the diverse perspectives and preferences of fresh graduates across the region.
