Doist, the company behind the popular to-do list application Todoist, is launching a new AI-powered feature called Todoist Ramble, designed to streamline task management. This “voice-to-tasks” functionality allows users to dictate their to-do items using natural language, eliminating the need for manual typing. The feature aims to simplify task capture for users on the go, offering a hands-free alternative to traditional note-taking methods.

Available starting today across iOS, Android, desktop, and web platforms, Todoist Ramble supports 38 languages. Beginner plan users have access with limited monthly sessions, while Pro and Business subscribers enjoy unlimited use. The launch comes after extensive beta testing with Todoist’s experimental user base, indicating a strong user demand for voice-activated to-do list capabilities.

Todoist Ramble: How AI Powers Task Management

Ramble leverages large language models (LLMs) to convert spoken words into organized tasks. Specifically, the feature utilizes Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash Live model via Vertex AI for real-time speech understanding. As a user speaks, the app transcribes the audio and identifies key details like task descriptions, deadlines, priorities, and assignees.

The system is designed to be conversational, allowing users to refine tasks mid-dictation. For example, users can say “Actually, make that Thursday” or “that’s all” to adjust details or signal completion. This dynamic interaction sets it apart from simple voice recording apps.

Privacy and Security Considerations

Doist emphasizes user privacy, stating that audio data is not stored or used for AI training purposes. The company also highlights its SOC2 Type II certification, demonstrating a commitment to security standards. This is a key differentiator as concerns around data privacy continue to grow with the increasing use of AI-powered tools.

The Rise of Voice-Activated Productivity Tools

Todoist Ramble enters a growing market of AI-driven productivity solutions. Similar functionality is appearing in various forms, including Amazon’s Bee wearable, which transcribes speech and suggests to-dos, and devices from Plaud that focus on meeting note-taking. Additionally, the emerging market of AI-powered smart rings, such as those from Sandbar and Pebble, offer quick task capture via physical gestures.

However, Ramble distinguishes itself by integrating directly into an established task management application. This provides a seamless workflow for existing Todoist users, rather than requiring them to switch between multiple apps. The integration with a robust system for organizing and prioritizing tasks is a significant advantage.

According to Doist, initial beta testing showed promising results. Approximately 76,000 testers completed nearly 290,000 Ramble sessions within the first three weeks. Task creation success rates improved from 40% in October to 62% in December, and the feature drove a five-fold increase in upgrades from the entry-level plan. These metrics suggest a strong positive impact on user engagement and revenue.

The development of Ramble reflects a broader trend toward utilizing AI to simplify everyday tasks. The ability to quickly capture thoughts and convert them into actionable items is particularly valuable in today’s fast-paced environment. This trend is fueled by advancements in artificial intelligence and speech recognition technology.

The feature is accessible through a Home Screen or Lock Screen shortcut on iOS, and via app shortcuts, widgets, and quick settings tiles on Android. This ease of access is intended to encourage frequent use and make task capture as frictionless as possible.

Looking ahead, Doist will likely focus on refining Ramble’s accuracy and expanding its integration with other productivity tools. Further improvements to the LLM could enable more nuanced task interpretation and automated prioritization. The company will also need to monitor user feedback and address any privacy concerns that may arise as the feature gains wider adoption. The long-term success of Ramble will depend on its ability to consistently deliver a reliable and user-friendly experience.
