Dominic Thiem’s Grand Slam career came to a disappointing end at the US Open when he suffered a defeat in the first round to Ben Shelton. Thiem, who won his only major at the same venue in 2020, has been struggling with injuries which have impacted his performance in recent years. The former world number three had announced his retirement from tennis, citing a persistent wrist injury that has hindered his ability to fully recover. Despite a promising start to his career with a victory over Alexander Zverev in the 2020 US Open final, Thiem’s journey has been marred by setbacks.

Following his triumph at the 2020 US Open, where he overcame a two-set deficit to claim the title, Thiem seemed poised to challenge the dominant trio of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal. However, his subsequent losses in three consecutive Slam finals to Nadal and Djokovic, coupled with a wrist injury suffered in 2021, derailed his career. The injury forced him to sit out the remainder of the 2021 season, and his return to the court in 2022 has been challenging, with his ranking dropping outside the top 100 for the first time in over a decade.

Thiem expressed gratitude to his fans and supporters for their unwavering encouragement throughout his career. Despite the challenges he faced, he acknowledged the impact of his 2020 US Open victory, which was achieved under strict Covid-19 protocols with limited spectators. The Austrian tennis star relished the opportunity to compete on the grand stage once again, thanking the fans for their continued support and understanding during his absence. Thiem’s resilience and determination have endeared him to fans and players alike, with Shelton praising his rival for his remarkable career achievements.

Having won just two main draw matches in 2022 prior to the US Open, Thiem needed a wildcard to compete in the tournament as his ranking plummeted to 210. Despite the odds stacked against him, Thiem showed commendable sportsmanship and grace in defeat, acknowledging the talent and dedication of his opponent, Ben Shelton. The American player, who had admired Thiem’s career from afar, paid tribute to the Austrian’s accomplishments and the impact he has had on the sport. The exchange of kind words between the two players highlighted the camaraderie and mutual respect that exists among tennis professionals.

Thiem’s journey at the US Open may have ended in a defeat, but his legacy in the sport remains intact. With 17 career titles and over $30 million in prize money, Thiem has left an indelible mark on the tennis world. Despite his decision to retire and the challenges he has faced in recent years, his passion for the sport and his infectious smile have endeared him to fans worldwide. As he bids farewell to competitive tennis, Thiem’s impact on the next generation of players and his enduring legacy will continue to inspire and motivate aspiring athletes. Dominic Thiem’s journey may have concluded on a bittersweet note, but his contributions to the sport will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
