Doha, Qatar – Saudi Arabia advanced to the semi-finals of the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 after a hard-fought 2-1 extra-time victory against Palestine in the quarter-finals. The Green Falcons, considered strong contenders for the tournament title, overcame a resilient Palestinian side following a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes. This win sets up a semi-final clash against Jordan, who previously defeated Iraq.

The match, played at the vibrant stadium in Qatar, saw Mohammed Kanno score the decisive goal for Saudi Arabia, securing his position as a joint-leading scorer in the competition with three goals. Saudi Arabia had previously topped their group with wins over Oman and Comoros, but suffered a setback with a 1-0 loss to Morocco.

Saudi Arabia’s Road to the Semi-Finals in the FIFA Arab Cup

Saudi Arabia’s journey through the tournament began with a dominant performance in the group stage. Their initial victories demonstrated their attacking prowess and defensive solidity, quickly establishing them as favorites. However, the loss to Morocco highlighted vulnerabilities and the intense competition within the Arab Cup.

The quarter-final against Palestine proved to be their most challenging match yet. Palestine had impressed throughout the tournament with their spirited play and tactical discipline. The game was opened by a Saudi penalty, swiftly answered by Oday Dabbagh, forcing the match into extra time.

Key Performances and Standout Players

Midfielder Mohammed Kanno has emerged as a crucial player for Saudi Arabia, not only scoring important goals but also dictating the tempo of play. Defender Ali Majrashi has also been a consistent performer, providing a strong presence at the back.

Salem Al Dawsari, a two-time AFC Player of the Year, remains a key figure in the Saudi attack, though he is yet to fully replicate his club form on the international stage during this tournament. His experience and skill are expected to be vital as the competition progresses.

Despite the victory, Saudi Arabia’s coach, Herve Renard, was quick to praise Palestine’s efforts. According to reports, Renard acknowledged the Lions of Canaan’s determination and strong performance throughout the tournament, showcasing good sportsmanship.

Majrashi echoed this sentiment, stating that winning was paramount but recognizing the difficulty of the match and offering well wishes to the Palestinian team. He also acknowledged the overall competitiveness of the tournament, noting that every game presents a significant challenge.

The upcoming semi-final against Jordan is anticipated to be another closely contested affair. Jordan’s victory over Iraq demonstrated their own capabilities and tactical flexibility. The Nashama will pose a different kind of threat compared to Palestine, requiring Saudi Arabia to adapt their strategy. The Jordanian national team has been steadily improving in recent years, making them a dangerous opponent.

This edition of the Arab Cup has been notable for its high level of play and surprising results, challenging pre-tournament expectations. The tournament serves as important preparation for participating nations ahead of future World Cup qualifying campaigns.

Saudi Arabia’s semi-final match against Jordan is scheduled for today at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, with kick-off at 8:30 PM local time. The outcome of this match will determine which team advances to the final and continues their pursuit of the Arab Cup title. The competition remains open, and the final result is far from certain.
