The Saudi Foreign Minister Stresses the Urgent Need for UN Reform

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan reiterated the Kingdom’s dedication to reforming the United Nations to increase its efficiency in tackling global threats and humanitarian crises. Speaking at the Summit of the Future during the 79th UN General Assembly in New York, Prince Faisal emphasized the need for a new international framework that supports sustainable development and equitable growth, especially for developing nations. He highlighted the UN’s failure to address the humanitarian crisis in Palestine and stressed the urgency of reforming the UN system for a better future.

Prince Faisal mentioned Saudi Arabia’s active participation in shaping the Charter of the Future, which aims to enhance multilateral cooperation and ensure that international institutions effectively respond to contemporary challenges. He expressed optimism that this charter would bring about a significant change in multilateral work and contribute to establishing a fair and responsive international system. Regarding climate change, the foreign minister emphasized the importance of addressing its challenges while taking into account the diverse circumstances and capacities of different nations.

Prince Faisal underscored the need for energy transitions to be guided by three core principles: energy security, economic prosperity, and addressing the impacts of climate change without compromising any of these principles. He concluded his remarks by reaffirming Saudi Arabia’s determination to achieve the goals outlined in the charter, aligning them with the Kingdom’s ambitious Vision 2030 development plan and its commitment to enhancing international cooperation. The Saudi delegation at the summit included Princess Reema bint Bandar bin Sultan, Ambassador to the United States, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdullah Al-Swaha, Minister of Economy and Planning Faisal Al-Ibrahim, and several other senior officials.

Overall, Prince Faisal’s speech at the Summit of the Future highlighted Saudi Arabia’s commitment to reforming the United Nations to address global challenges more effectively.
