Metformin is a widely used oral prescription drug for controlling blood sugar in type 2 diabetes. Recent studies have shown potential health benefits of metformin in fighting cancer, obesity, and improving the health of those with liver, kidney, and cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, experts suggest that metformin may increase healthy life years and even extend lifespan. Some studies have indicated that metformin can increase longevity in animals, and there is ongoing research to explore its potential as an anti-aging treatment for humans.
Type 2 diabetes affects millions of people worldwide, leading to a range of life-threatening health complications if left untreated. Metformin, approved by the FDA in 1994, is an effective way to control blood sugar when combined with a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels and other health parameters is essential during metformin treatment. Metformin works by helping the body respond to insulin and decreasing sugar production by the liver, but the exact mechanisms by which it has these effects are still being studied.
Aside from its role in managing type 2 diabetes, metformin has been found to have other potential health benefits, including anti-cancer properties, combating obesity, and protecting the cardiovascular and nervous system. Some studies have suggested that metformin may have anti-aging effects as well. The Targeting Aging with Metformin (TAME) Trial aims to investigate whether metformin can delay the onset or progression of age-related chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and dementia.
Many factors contribute to healthy aging, including regular exercise, a healthy diet, sufficient sleep, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and getting regular health screenings. Some studies have shown that metformin can activate certain cellular processes that may contribute to its anti-aging effects. However, further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms by which metformin affects aging and lifespan.
While some animal studies have shown promising results in terms of metformin’s ability to extend lifespan, the effects in humans are still being studied. Metformin’s potential to delay the onset of age-related diseases and improve overall health in older adults has sparked interest in its use as an anti-aging intervention. However, caution is advised, as metformin may have side effects such as stomach upset, nausea, or diarrhea. The ongoing TAME trial aims to explore metformin’s potential as an anti-aging treatment and could potentially lead to FDA approval for its use in promoting healthy aging in individuals without type 2 diabetes.
