In the world’s largest democracy, India, polls have opened for the nationwide election, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking another five-year term. Celebrities, industrialists, and politicians in Mumbai, the country’s financial capital, turned up to cast their votes in six constituencies in Maharashtra and 43 others nationwide. Among them were Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Ranveer Singh, along with industrialist Mukesh Ambani. Actor Akshay Kumar expressed his desire to see India become “developed and strong” after casting his vote. However, voter turnout in Maharashtra was relatively low at 54%, compared to 73% in West Bengal.
The key players in Mumbai’s elections are Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Indian National Congress, and rival factions of Shiv Sena. Mumbai, often called the “city of dreams,” is a melting pot of extreme wealth and poverty, with skyscrapers overlooking slum dwellings. The city attracts migrants from all over the country in search of opportunities. However, many migrant workers are unable to vote as they are required to cast their ballots in their home constituencies. This poses a challenge for underprivileged daily-wage workers who cannot afford to travel home to vote.
Concerns among voters in Mumbai include rising inflation, a desire for better education, and employment opportunities. Sachin Chaudhary, a 34-year-old grocer, expressed his hope for a reduction in costs and improved employment prospects. The election turnout highlighted the divide between the rich and famous, who were seen exercising their democratic right, and the marginalized migrant workers who are often left out of the electoral process due to logistical barriers. The election outcomes will have a significant impact on the future of India, with voters hoping for positive changes that will benefit all sections of society.
