Abdulaziz Al Hamad, a 40-year-old PADI-certified scuba diving instructor and first aid trainer, has taken on the unique role of retrieving lost devices from the seabed of Bahrain Bay. This task combines his passion for diving, environmental stewardship, and helping others. Al Hamad finds fulfillment in restoring valuable items and memories to their owners while also keeping the ocean clean and protecting the marine environment. He has observed patterns in how devices are lost, often during recreational activities like kayaking or jet skiing. Al Hamad advocates for better precautions, such as using waterproof cases or lanyards to secure devices. Equipped with specialized scuba gear, his retrieval operations involve precise depth tracking, visibility tools, metal detectors, navigation aids, and mesh bags for safe recovery. His PADI training is essential for navigating challenging conditions and staying calm under pressure.

Although there is growing awareness of the risks of losing electronic devices in water, carelessness still persists among recreational enthusiasts. Al Hamad emphasizes the need for education and awareness to prevent such losses. The process of finding and retrieving lost devices involves gathering details about the loss, systematic underwater searches, and adapting to environmental challenges like strong currents and poor visibility. Timing is crucial, as devices have limited durability underwater, and delays can lead to further damage. Al Hamad’s quick thinking and adaptability are essential in these situations.

Al Hamad recalls two memorable retrieval cases, including recovering a diamond wedding ring worth $3,000 and a wallet belonging to a Malaysian traveler with urgent documents and credit cards. The relief and gratitude from the owners make his efforts worthwhile. By the end of 2024, Al Hamad estimates he has successfully retrieved around 40 to 50 devices. Each retrieval represents a technical achievement and a demonstration of his dedication to helping others and protecting the marine environment. Diving is not just a profession for Al Hamad but a mission to make a difference, one lost device at a time.
