The Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar, recently opened the “Splendours of the Atlas: A Voyage Through Morocco’s Heritage” exhibition. This landmark exhibition explores Morocco’s rich artistic and cultural traditions and is part of the Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture. Featuring around 200 artifacts, manuscripts, jewelry pieces, photographs, and musical instruments, some of which have never been displayed before, the exhibition narrates the vibrant history of Morocco and its enduring cultural legacy. Key loans from prominent Moroccan institutions, such as the National Foundation of Museums and the National Library of Rabat, will be on display alongside works from Qatar Museums, MIA, and the forthcoming Lusail Museum.

The exhibition highlights Morocco’s vast and varied artistic achievements over centuries of rich cultural history. Objects of extraordinary craftsmanship, from intricate jewelry to ancient manuscripts, offer visitors a rare glimpse into Morocco’s artistic heritage. Curated by MIA’s Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs, Dr. Mounia Chekhab-Abudaya, the exhibition aims to take visitors on a journey to explore Morocco through its people, landscape, and contributions to scholarship and artistic production. About sixty to seventy percent of the objects presented will be showcased for the first time.

A special commission by artist Noureddine Amir is featured in the exhibition, where he uses garments to create his body of work. Noureddine has created an installation of panels made from raw, organic materials native to Morocco utilizing traditional weaving techniques. The exhibition is organized into five thematic sections that explore different aspects of Morocco’s culture, including landscapes, society, history, artisanal mastery, and musical heritage. Each section offers a unique insight into the traditions and legacy of Morocco.

The exhibition also includes a publication featuring essays by Dr. Mounia Chekhab-Abudaya on each of the show’s key themes. Photographs and detailed object entries of each work in the show are also included. In partnership with the Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture, MIA is presenting the Ektashif: Morocco exhibition, featuring works by Qatari artists and designers who toured Morocco to gain new skills in traditional and Islamic arts. The exhibition showcases the exchange of cultural knowledge and skills between Qatar and Morocco through artistic expression.

Overall, the “Splendours of the Atlas: A Voyage Through Morocco’s Heritage” exhibition at the Museum of Islamic Art offers a unique and insightful exploration of Morocco’s rich artistic and cultural traditions. Through a diverse range of artifacts, manuscripts, jewelry pieces, photographs, and musical instruments, visitors can delve into the vibrant history of Morocco and its enduring cultural legacy. The exhibition aims to deepen understanding between nations and their people as part of the Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture, fostering cultural exchange and showcasing the beauty and richness of Morocco’s heritage to a global audience.
