Archaeological surveys in Dubai have revealed a rich history dating back over 300,000 years. From the Lower Palaeolithic to the Neolithic period and up to the late Islamic eras, the emirate boasts over 17 significant archaeological sites representing the historical inhabitants and their interactions in the Near East. Managed by Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, these sites aim to enhance Dubai’s global heritage map presence.

One of the most significant archaeological sites in Dubai is the Saruq al-Hadid Archaeological Site, discovered in 2002. Thought to be a center for Iron Age metal smelting, the site yielded a treasure trove of rare artifacts showcasing the region’s rich history. From bronze and stone vessels to weapons and jewelry, the site provides insight into the cultural depth of the region. The Islamic Era Jumeirah site, dating back to 900-1800 AD, reflects the prosperity of Islamic civilization with its architectural structures and decorations.

The Al Sufouh archaeological site, dating back to 2500-2000 BC, contains remains of a settlement from the third millennium BC. Excavations revealed earth-cut tombs and various artifacts from the Umm Al-Nar civilization period. Al Ashoush archaeological site, discovered in the 1970s, showcases a large settlement from the Bronze and Iron Ages with communal graves and numerous artifacts. Other significant sites in Dubai include Margham archaeological site, Jabal Al Yamh Tombs, Suhaila archaeological sites, and the Wadi Jima site.

The archaeological sites in Dubai provide valuable historical information and shed light on the emirate’s ancient and modern history. With artifacts ranging from pottery vessels to copper weapons and jewelry, these sites offer a glimpse into the past. Dubai Culture is actively working on preserving and conserving these sites to ensure their historical significance is maintained for future generations to appreciate. The diverse range of archaeological sites across Dubai reflects the rich cultural heritage of the emirate and its place on the global heritage map. Overall, these sites offer a unique opportunity to explore and learn about Dubai’s ancient civilizations and their enduring legacy.
