The Al Jasra Cultural and Social Club, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Culture in Doha, recently hosted a poetry evening featuring the talented Iraqi poet Sajida Al Mousawi. The event kicked off with an introduction and a poem dedicated to the host city of Doha, setting the tone for an emotionally charged evening. Al Mousawi captivated the audience with a series of powerful poems that reflected on the devastation and destruction faced by her native Iraq following a brutal occupation. Some of the poems recited included “Farewell,” “Call,” “Don’t Ask How I Am,” “Why Is My Country Being Destroyed?” and “The Sea Poem,” among others that delved deep into the suffering of the Iraqi people.

Al Mousawi’s poetic prowess was further highlighted as she read a touching poem about the victims of aggression in Gaza, including a child, a husband, and an elderly man. The poem conveyed the profound sorrow and shock felt by many witnessing the attacks on innocent lives. The evening was attended by a large audience of literature and poetry enthusiasts, who were moved by the poet’s words and storytelling. The event provided a platform for Al Mousawi to share her powerful and thought-provoking work with a receptive audience.

As the evening came to a close, a tribute was paid to Sajida Al Mousawi to honor her literary contributions. Khalid bin Ahmed Al-Abaidan, Vice Chairperson of the Al Jasra Club Board, presented the esteemed poet with a certificate of appreciation and a symbolic token. This gesture served as a recognition of Al Mousawi’s talent and dedication to her craft, as well as a token of gratitude for her sharing her work with the community. The poetry evening was not only a celebration of art and literature but also a reminder of the power of words to evoke emotions, spark conversations, and shed light on important issues facing society.

The event marked a significant moment in Doha’s cultural calendar, showcasing the importance of poetry and literature in promoting dialogue and understanding. Through her poignant poems, Sajida Al Mousawi shed light on the human experience of suffering and loss, connecting with her audience on a deeper level. Her work serves as a testament to the enduring power of poetry to capture emotions, provoke thought, and inspire change. The Al Jasra Cultural and Social Club’s poetry evening provided a platform for Al Mousawi to share her voice and perspective, resonating with those in attendance and leaving a lasting impact on the community.

In a world often plagued by conflict and division, events like the poetry evening at the Al Jasra Cultural and Social Club serve as a reminder of the unifying power of art and culture. Through the universal language of poetry, Al Mousawi was able to connect with diverse audiences and offer a unique perspective on the human experience. As a poet, she navigated complex themes with grace and insight, shining a light on the struggles faced by individuals and communities affected by war and violence. The event not only showcased Al Mousawi’s talent but also highlighted the role of artists and writers in fostering empathy, understanding, and compassion in society.

The Al Jasra Cultural and Social Club’s dedication to promoting cultural exchange and artistic expression was evident in the success of the poetry evening featuring Sajida Al Mousawi. By providing a platform for artists to share their work and engage with the community, the club continues to enrich the cultural landscape of Doha and beyond.
