Doha, Qatar – The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced a temporary full closure of the exit from Umm Al Houl Interchange impacting traffic flow to Hamad Port Road. This Umm Al Houl Interchange closure will begin at 2:00 AM on Friday, December 26, 2025, and remain in effect until 10:00 AM on Friday, January 2, 2026. Motorists traveling from Mesaieed Road towards the port are advised to plan alternative routes during this period.

The closure affects the specific exit leading from Mesaieed Road onto Hamad Port Road at the Umm Al Houl Interchange. Ashghal is urging all drivers to observe posted speed limits and utilize the designated diversion routes. The authority also recommends considering alternative streets to reach their destinations, with guidance available through maps provided by Ashghal.

Understanding the Umm Al Houl Interchange Closure and its Impact

Ashghal’s decision to close the exit is to facilitate essential maintenance work on the interchange. While the specific nature of the maintenance hasn’t been detailed, infrastructure projects of this scale often involve repairs to road surfaces, bridge supports, or signaling systems. Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring the long-term safety and efficiency of Qatar’s road network, particularly those serving vital economic hubs like Hamad Port.

Traffic Diversions and Alternative Routes

Ashghal has not yet released detailed maps of the diversion routes, but has stated they will be clearly marked. Drivers are encouraged to check Ashghal’s website and social media channels for updated information and route guidance before traveling. The closure is expected to cause congestion on Mesaieed Road, especially during peak hours.

Hamad Port Road is a critical artery for logistics and trade in Qatar, connecting the port to the country’s interior. The temporary disruption could lead to increased travel times for commercial vehicles and potentially impact supply chains. However, Ashghal has scheduled the closure during a period that typically experiences lower traffic volume, aiming to minimize the overall impact.

This isn’t the first time Ashghal has implemented temporary road closures for maintenance purposes. Qatar has been undergoing significant infrastructure development in recent years, including expansions and upgrades to its road network in preparation for major events. These projects often necessitate temporary disruptions to traffic flow, and Ashghal consistently communicates these closures to the public in advance.

The timing of the closure, spanning the end-of-year holiday period, may present challenges for some travelers. However, it also allows for a concentrated period of work without the need for repeated, shorter closures. The duration of the work is relatively short, suggesting the maintenance is focused and targeted.

Related infrastructure projects in the area, such as the ongoing development of the Al Wakra Road, may offer some alternative routes for drivers. However, these routes may also experience increased traffic due to the Umm Al Houl Interchange closure. Motorists should also be aware of potential delays related to other temporary road closures throughout Doha.

Following the completion of the maintenance work on January 2, 2026, Ashghal will reopen the exit. The authority has not specified whether there will be any follow-up work requiring further closures. Road users are advised to continue monitoring Ashghal’s announcements for any updates or changes to traffic management plans in the area. The success of the reopening will depend on the thoroughness of the maintenance and any unforeseen complications during the work.

Looking ahead, the public should remain vigilant for further announcements from Ashghal regarding road maintenance and construction projects. Continued infrastructure improvements are expected as Qatar prepares for future growth and events. Monitoring Ashghal’s official channels will be the most reliable way to stay informed about potential traffic disruptions.
