The event, held from February 17th to 18th, saw Team Qatar GT compete against a diverse field of GT cars and experienced racing teams. Qualifying proved to be a highlight, with the Qatari squad securing second place. This initial success set expectations for the races, though the challenges of endurance racing quickly became apparent.

Team Qatar GT’s Performance in the Asian Le Mans Series

The Asian Le Mans Series is a multi-round endurance racing competition sanctioned by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), the organization behind the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The series serves as a pathway for teams and drivers to earn automatic invitations to the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans race. This year’s series features multiple classes, including GT, LMP2, and LMP3, attracting international participation.

Race 1 Challenges and Data Collection

Race 1 presented a difficult set of circumstances for Team Qatar GT, resulting in a 19th-place finish. While not the desired outcome, the team focused on gathering crucial data and gaining valuable experience in race conditions. According to team reports, the race highlighted areas for improvement in car setup and race strategy, particularly regarding tire management and pit stop efficiency.

The Sepang circuit, known for its demanding heat and humidity, also played a role in the challenges faced during Race 1. Maintaining consistent performance throughout the long race distance proved difficult for all competitors, and the Qatari team used the opportunity to assess driver endurance and hydration strategies.

Strong Recovery in Race 2

Demonstrating adaptability and determination, Team Qatar GT significantly improved its performance in Race 2, finishing in a respectable 10th position. This result showcased the team’s ability to analyze data from Race 1 and implement effective changes. The drivers executed a clean race, minimizing errors and maximizing track time.

The improved finish was also attributed to effective teamwork and communication between the drivers and the pit crew. Auer, Al Maadeed, and Al Khelaifi worked collaboratively to optimize the car’s performance and navigate the competitive field. This positive momentum is expected to carry over into the subsequent rounds of the GT racing series.

The team’s participation in the Asian Le Mans Series is part of Qatar’s broader strategy to develop its motorsports infrastructure and promote its national teams on the international stage. This initiative aligns with the country’s vision to diversify its sporting portfolio and attract global events. The Ministry of Sports and Youth has been a key supporter of the team’s efforts.

Looking ahead, Team Qatar GT will be analyzing the data collected from the Sepang round to further refine its strategy and car setup. The next race on the calendar is expected to take place in February or March, though the exact location and date are still to be confirmed by the series organizers. The team will likely focus on improving consistency and maximizing points-scoring opportunities in the upcoming events.

The success of Team Qatar GT in the Le Mans Series will depend on its ability to adapt to different track conditions and maintain a competitive pace throughout the endurance races. Factors such as weather, mechanical reliability, and driver performance will all play a crucial role in determining the team’s overall results. Observers will be watching to see if the team can build on its initial performance and challenge for podium finishes as the season progresses.
