The Directorate General of Health Services in Dhofar Governorate and South Al Batinah governorates have launched the ‘National Survey of Non-Communicable Diseases’ in Oman. The aim of this survey is to enhance community health and develop the healthcare system in the Sultanate of Oman on scientific foundations. The survey targets citizens and residents in Oman over the age of 15 years, collecting accurate data on the prevalence of diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, and cancer. These diseases are considered significant challenges for health sectors globally and have a major impact on the health of individuals and societies due to unhealthy health behaviors.

Dr. Hamoud bin Saeed Al Fazari, Director of the Primary Care Department in Dhofar Governorate, explained that the national survey programme consists of two phases. The first phase involves field visits to update residential complex maps and enumerate citizens and residents, while the second phase includes visits to residences to collect samples and data by using an approved questionnaire, taking physical measurements, and conducting health examinations. This survey project aims to accurately assess the current health situation in Oman, determine health priorities, and develop innovative health policies and programs to prevent non-communicable diseases and reduce their associated health and economic burdens.

The project was launched at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah, under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Marwan bin Turki Al Said, Governor of Dhofar. The survey has also commenced in South Al Batinah Governorate and will last for two months. Dr. Rashid bin Saeed Al Saadi, Acting Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services in South Al Batinah, stated that the project aims to collect comprehensive data on the prevalence of non-communicable diseases and their associated risk factors. The survey will contribute to developing strategic and preventive plans and health programs to improve community health, prevent these diseases, reduce their risk factors, and enhance individual and community health.

This national survey of non-communicable diseases is part of the Ministry of Health’s efforts to ensure the health and safety of citizens and residents in Oman. By gathering accurate data on the prevalence of diseases and their risk factors, the survey will provide essential information to develop effective health policies and programs. It will also help in curbing the spread of non-communicable diseases and implementing suitable health interventions to improve the overall health status in Oman. The survey is a crucial step towards addressing the challenges posed by non-communicable diseases and improving the well-being of individuals and communities in the Sultanate.
