Sunil Gavaskar, the iconic cricketer, had a chance meeting with Shyam Bhatia in Sharjah in 1981, leading to a lasting friendship. Bhatia’s passion for cricket and his efforts to develop the game in the UAE impressed Gavaskar. As the friendship blossomed over the years, Bhatia gifted Gavaskar a book compiled alongside Indian sports journalist Debasish Datta on Gavaskar’s 75th birthday. Despite his initial reluctance, Gavaskar was eventually convinced by Bhatia to publish the book, which features contributions from legendary cricketers like Garry Sobers, Clive Lloyd, Viv Richards, Sachin Tendulkar, and others.

Gavaskar shared that he first met Bhatia in 1981 during a match in Sharjah and their friendship grew due to Bhatia’s love for the game and hospitality towards the Indian team. The book, ‘Sunny G’, was a special gift for Gavaskar on his birthday, with many of his colleagues and friends sharing their impressions of him. Reflecting on gifts from fans, Gavaskar mentioned a heartfelt birthday card he receives annually from a well-wisher, which holds a special place in his heart. He also praised Bhatia’s cricket museum in Dubai, describing it as a mind-blowing treat for cricket lovers.

Bhatia is known not only for his cricket museum but also for his contributions to growing the game at the grassroots level worldwide. He sends cricket kits to countries like Japan and helps develop cricket in places like Ukraine, showcasing his selfless dedication to the sport. Gavaskar emphasized the importance of recognizing Bhatia’s efforts, suggesting that the ICC should honor him for his contributions to the game. Reflecting on the glory days of Sharjah cricket, Gavaskar praised Abdul Rahman Bukhatir for his vision in building the Sharjah stadium after the exhibition match between Gavaskar XI and Miandad XI in 1981.

As a legend of the game, Gavaskar acknowledged the progress of cricket in the UAE, with the under-19 and women’s teams making significant strides. He expressed his admiration for the talent and drive of the UAE teams, encouraging them to believe in themselves to achieve greater success. Overall, Gavaskar’s friendship with Bhatia and their shared love for the game of cricket have left a lasting impact on both individuals and the cricketing community.
