Kuwaiti students gained invaluable insight into the world of professional journalism this week with a visit to Kuwait Times and Kuwait News. The educational tour, undertaken by students from Sultan International Academy on Tuesday, aimed to demystify the news production process, from initial concept to final publication – both in print and digitally. Understanding how journalism functions is increasingly important in today’s media landscape, and this hands-on experience provided a solid foundation for these aspiring communicators.

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Kuwait Times

The visit wasn’t a passive observation; it was a carefully curated journey through the various departments that make a news organization tick. The students were eager to learn about the intricacies of bringing news to the public, and the Kuwait Times team was happy to oblige.

Exploring the Editorial Workflow

The heart of any newspaper is its editorial department. Here, the students met with editors and reporters who detailed the complete editorial workflow. They learned how story ideas are conceived, researched, written, and meticulously edited. The process of shaping a narrative, ensuring accuracy, and maintaining journalistic integrity was a key takeaway.

It was fascinating for the students to see how collaboration is central to the process. Different sections – local news, international affairs, business, sports – work together, sharing information and ensuring a comprehensive and balanced news offering. This interconnectedness highlighted the complexity of modern news production.

The Importance of the Archive

Beyond the fast-paced world of current events, the students were given a glimpse into the past with a visit to the newspaper’s Archive room. Archivist Yousef Abu-Ghazaleh showcased historic issues of the Kuwait Times, a treasure trove of information documenting the nation’s history.

A particularly memorable moment was when students were able to find the news published on their individual dates of birth. This personal connection to the archive brought history to life and underscored the enduring role of media in documenting our lives.

Diving into Digital Content Creation

The tour didn’t stop at traditional print journalism. Recognizing the shift towards digital platforms, the Kuwait Times team also demonstrated the tools and techniques used to create engaging online content. Content creators Dhoha Al-Issa and Zainab Dashti led a practical workshop, giving students a hands-on experience with the technology behind digital storytelling.

Hands-on Studio Workshop

The workshop focused on the fundamentals of video production. Students learned how to operate microphones, adjust lighting, and utilize cameras to record a short video segment. This practical exercise allowed them to appreciate the skills required to produce compelling video content for online audiences.

They were guided through the entire process, from scripting and filming to basic editing techniques. This experience was particularly valuable, as video is now a dominant form of news delivery and communication.

Understanding Kuwait Times’ Digital Services

Dhoha Al-Issa also explained the range of digital services offered by Kuwait Times, including their website, social media platforms, and online video channels. This provided the students with a broader understanding of how the newspaper adapts to the evolving needs of its audience and leverages new technologies to reach a wider readership.

The Printing Process Explained

A crucial, often unseen, aspect of newspaper production is the printing process itself. Al-Watheq Bellah Darwish, Head of the Printing Department, provided a detailed explanation of how the Kuwait Times is brought to life on paper. He walked the students through the machinery and processes involved, from plate-making to the final printed copies.

This segment of the tour highlighted the technical expertise and logistical coordination required to deliver a physical newspaper to readers every day. It also offered a contrast to the immediacy of digital journalism, showcasing the unique strengths of both formats.

A Valuable Educational Experience

The visit to Kuwait Times and Kuwait News proved to be a highly enriching experience for the students of Sultan International Academy. It provided them with a comprehensive overview of the entire news production cycle, from the initial spark of an idea to the final delivery of information to the public.

The opportunity to interact with experienced journalists, explore the historical archives, and experiment with digital content creation tools offered a unique and valuable learning experience. This exposure will undoubtedly inspire some of these students to pursue careers in the dynamic and ever-evolving field of journalism and media. The experience underscored the importance of responsible reporting and the vital role a free press plays in a democratic society.
