The UK’s new prime minister, Keir Starmer, has emphasized the need for the country to be more engaged on the world stage, stating that the UK has been too “inward looking”. He spoke about resetting relations with the European Union at a NATO Summit press briefing, highlighting the importance of having a closer relationship with Brussels. Despite leading Labour to a landslide election victory in July, Starmer has ruled out rejoining the EU, the single market, or the customs unions, citing potential turmoil in the debate. However, he aims to strengthen ties with the EU and work towards a more collaborative approach.

During a meeting with US President Joe Biden, a critic of the Brexit deal, Starmer received support for his ambitions to bring the UK closer to the European Union. Biden highlighted the UK’s role in tying the transatlantic alliance together and expressed the importance of maintaining close relations with Europe. The ongoing efforts to reset relationships within the UK extend beyond the EU, with Starmer also meeting Estonian premier Kaja Kallas at the recent Nato summit. He emphasized the significance of NATO as the cornerstone of defense in Europe and the importance of working with European allies amidst current challenges.

In a bid to reset relations within the UK, Starmer has traveled across all regions, including Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, where tensions have arisen due to border controls post-Brexit. The prime minister’s efforts to engage with various leaders and countries are part of a broader strategy to strengthen diplomatic relations and address key issues such as the war in Ukraine, immigration, and democracy. Starmer’s upcoming meetings with the presidents of Ireland and France will focus on these pressing matters, particularly in light of the rising far-right movements in Europe.

Overall, Starmer’s approach to international relations reflects a desire to strike a balance between maintaining the UK’s sovereignty post-Brexit while also fostering closer ties with the EU and other key allies. By emphasizing the importance of cooperation and partnerships, he aims to position the UK as a key player on the global stage. As discussions continue on various issues such as defense, immigration, and democracy, Starmer’s commitment to resetting relationships with EU and non-EU countries alike underscores his vision for a more engaged and collaborative approach to foreign policy.
