Sri Lanka dominated New Zealand in the second Test in Galle, with debutant off-spinner Nishan Peiris leading the way by taking six wickets to secure a series win after 15 years. The victory came in the form of an innings and 154-run triumph, with New Zealand being all out for 360 in their second innings after being asked to follow-on. Peiris, along with spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, was instrumental in the win, sharing 18 wickets between them. Jayasuriya took 6-42 in the first innings, while the Sri Lankan batting unit had set the tone by scoring a massive 602-5 declared.

Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva praised his team’s performance, highlighting the exceptional batting display and the spinners’ effectiveness. The hosts were able to bowl out New Zealand for just 88 runs in the first innings, setting the tone for their dominant display throughout the match. Despite some resistance from New Zealand’s lower order batsmen, Sri Lanka’s bowlers, led by Peiris, managed to break through and secure the victory. Peiris played a crucial role in dismantling the opposition’s batting lineup and securing his maiden five-wicket haul in the process.

New Zealand captain Tim Southee acknowledged the challenge of playing in Galle and recognized Sri Lanka’s strength at home. The visitors struggled to make an impact after losing the toss and failing to capitalize on key moments in the match. Sri Lanka’s win was a result of their overall dominance in all departments of the game, from batting to bowling. The victory marked the first series win against New Zealand since 2009 for Sri Lanka, who had previously won the opening match by 63 runs in the two-match series.

Despite the comprehensive win, Sri Lanka’s fielding was not without flaws, as they dropped several catches that could have wrapped up the match earlier. The missed opportunities allowed New Zealand to prolong their resistance, but ultimately, it was Sri Lanka’s relentless bowling attack that sealed the victory. The winless streak for New Zealand at Galle continued, with this being their sixth Test appearance at the venue without a victory. The result also highlighted Sri Lanka’s dominance at home and their ability to outplay strong opposition like New Zealand in Test cricket.

In conclusion, Sri Lanka’s emphatic series win against New Zealand showcased their strength in all aspects of the game, from batting to bowling. The exceptional performances of debutant Nishan Peiris and spinner Prabath Jayasuriya played a crucial role in securing the historic series win for Sri Lanka. The team’s resilience and dominance at home were evident throughout the series, with both their batting and bowling units clicking in unison to outclass New Zealand. The victory marks a significant moment for Sri Lankan cricket, as they continue to build on their success and aim for more achievements in the future.
