Sri Lanka’s uncapped off-spinner Nishan Peiris has been included in the squad for the second Test against New Zealand after seamer Vishwa Fernando suffered an injury. The 33-year-old experienced bowler developed tightness in his right hamstring and will undergo rehabilitation at SLC’s high-performance center. He missed out on the first Test, which Sri Lanka won comfortably by 63 runs, and now Peiris has a chance to make his debut in the final Test.

Peiris has been part of Sri Lanka’s squad in 2018 and earlier this year but is yet to play a match for the national team. With Ramesh Mendis struggling for form, Peiris could be handed his maiden Test cap to strengthen the spin department. Mendis, who took three wickets in each inning of the opening Test, faced difficulties in controlling his line and length, allowing New Zealand to ease the pressure on their side. Peiris, on the other hand, has a solid track record in first-class cricket with 172 wickets in 41 matches at an average of 24.37.

In the first Test, Mendis conceded 101 runs in his first inning spell and 83 runs in the second inning, with his economy rate being the highest among Sri Lankan spinners. Peiris, on the other hand, showcased his skills by taking three wickets in the unofficial Test between Sri Lanka A and South Africa A. With Sri Lanka aiming to climb up the rankings, Peiris’ inclusion in the squad could prove to be beneficial as they look to maintain their winning momentum against New Zealand in the final Test.

Sri Lanka’s 63-run victory over New Zealand in the opening Test propelled them to the third spot with a 50 percent point percentage. As they gear up for the final Test, Sri Lanka has an opportunity to improve their point percentage to 69.23 percent if they manage to secure another win against New Zealand. This victory would not only help them climb up the rankings but also boost the confidence of the team as they prepare for future series and competitions. The inclusion of Peiris could add depth to their bowling attack and provide the team with more options to counter the strong New Zealand lineup.

With Peiris’ potential debut on the horizon, Sri Lanka will be looking to build on their recent success and continue their winning streak against New Zealand. The off-spinner’s selection in the squad highlights the team’s commitment to developing young talent and providing opportunities for new players to showcase their skills on the international stage. As Sri Lanka aims to cement their position in the cricketing world, Peiris’ inclusion could mark the beginning of a promising career for the talented spin bowler as he aims to make a meaningful contribution to the team’s success in the final Test against New Zealand.
