Sri Lanka’s national cricket team has included top-order batsman Oshada Fernando in their 16-member squad for the upcoming two-Test series against New Zealand. Nishan Madushka, on the other hand, has been omitted from the squad. Fernando, who last played for the Test team in March 2023, earned his place back after impressive performances for the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team against South Africa, scoring 122 and 80 runs. Madushka, who struggled in the recent Test series against England, managing only 24 runs in four innings, was left out.

Sri Lanka made some changes to their bowling department, leaving out Kasun Rajitha and Nisala Tharaka, and including wicketkeeper-batsman Sadeera Samarawickrama in the squad. The team, led by Dhananjaya De Silva, will face New Zealand in two matches at Galle as part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle. The first match is scheduled to start on Wednesday and will last six days with a rest day in between. The squad includes experienced players like Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews, and Dinesh Chandimal, along with promising talents like Pathum Nissanka and Kamindu Mendis.

Oshada Fernando’s inclusion in the Sri Lankan squad brings a fresh dynamic to the team’s top-order batting. The talented right-handed batsman has shown his potential with strong performances in domestic and ‘A’ team matches, earning him a recall to the national team. His ability to score big runs and anchor the innings will be crucial for Sri Lanka’s chances against New Zealand. The team will rely on Fernando’s batting prowess to provide stability and resilience in the face of tough opposition.

While Oshada Fernando’s return is a positive move for Sri Lanka, the exclusion of Nishan Madushka reflects the team’s desire for consistency and performance. Madushka’s recent struggles with the bat have led to his omission from the squad, as the team looks to strengthen their opening batting options. The decision to bring in Sadeera Samarawickrama as a wicketkeeper-batsman adds depth to the squad and provides flexibility in team selection. The management’s focus on player form and performance underscores the team’s commitment to building a competitive and balanced side.

With the upcoming Test series against New Zealand, Sri Lanka will be looking to put their best foot forward and compete at the highest level. The inclusion of experienced players like Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews, along with emerging talents like Kamindu Mendis and Pathum Nissanka, gives the team a good mix of youth and experience. The team will be eager to make a mark in the ICC World Test Championship cycle and secure valuable points against a strong New Zealand side. The series promises to be an exciting battle between two competitive teams vying for supremacy in Test cricket.

As Sri Lanka prepares to face New Zealand in the upcoming Test series, the team’s focus will be on executing their plans effectively and playing to their strengths. The return of Oshada Fernando and the inclusion of Sadeera Samarawickrama add depth and variety to the squad, giving the team options in both batting and wicketkeeping departments. With Dhananjaya De Silva leading from the front, Sri Lanka will be aiming to put up a strong performance and challenge New Zealand in their home conditions. The team’s preparations and strategy will be key in determining their success in the Test series and their progress in the World Test Championship.
