Shamar Joseph, the West Indies pace bowler, had an outstanding start to his career earlier this year against Australia. He was recently named in the 15-man squad for the Twenty20 World Cup. Joseph, who had never played a T20 international, made a memorable debut by dismissing Steve Smith with his first ball in Test cricket. He went on to take 13 wickets in two Tests against Australia, including a remarkable 7-68 in a game that led West Indies to an unexpected victory in Brisbane.

Desmond Haynes, the director of West Indies Cricket, praised Joseph’s performance in Australia, stating that he had proven himself with his skills on the field. Despite only playing three first-class T20 matches, Joseph’s selection for the World Cup squad highlights his potential as a key player for the team. Sunil Narine, who had been in great form in the Indian Premier League, was not included in the squad after announcing his international retirement in 2023.

Shimron Hetmyer, who missed the T20I series against Australia, returns to the squad alongside captain Rovman Powell. Hetmyer has been in good form in the IPL and will be a valuable asset in the middle-order. The selection process was not easy, as Kyle Mayers was omitted in favor of a lower-order batsman. The squad boasts a strong lineup of big hitters and all-rounders, including Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Jason Holder, and others.

With Oshane Thomas left out, Alzarri Joseph will lead the bowling attack with support from Shamar Joseph. Akeal Hossain and Gudakesh Motie will handle the spin-bowling department. The West Indies, two-time champions, are part of Group C alongside Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Uganda. Their campaign kicks off on June 2, and the squad is determined to make an impact on the tournament with their talented lineup. The squad includes experienced players like Johnson Charles, Roston Chase, and Shai Hope, who will provide stability in the team’s batting lineup.

In conclusion, the West Indies Twenty20 World Cup squad is a mix of seasoned players and promising newcomers who have the potential to make a mark in the tournament. The team’s strength lies in its powerful batting lineup and talented bowlers, led by Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph. With the guidance of captain Rovman Powell and a strong support staff, the West Indies team is poised for a competitive showing in the upcoming tournament. Fans can expect exciting matches as the team aims to add a third Twenty20 World Cup title to their collection.
