Stuart McMurdo, a seasoned veteran of the UAE golf industry, is bidding farewell to Dubai after almost 21 years at JA The Resort. Reflecting on his time in Dubai, McMurdo expressed his pride in witnessing and actively shaping the growth of both Dubai and its thriving golf sector. As he prepares to move on to his next chapter, McMurdo will return to England with his family to take on the role of General Manager at Hertfordshire Golf Club. He shared his early experiences in Dubai, where he became a junior member of Emirates Golf Club and represented British Universities in golf competitions.
After reconnecting with Dubai unexpectedly thanks to an opportunity at JA Resort, Jebel Ali, McMurdo quickly accepted the position of Golf Operations Manager. His time at JA Resort included organizing the JA Jebel Ali Challenge Match in 2004 as part of the HERO Dubai Desert Classic, where golf stars like Tiger Woods and Mark O’Meara participated. In 2006, McMurdo had a significant year, playing as an amateur in the Desert Classic and experiencing memorable moments with Tiger Woods and other golfing legends during their stay at the resort.
Reflecting on his mentorship under James Williams for 14 years, McMurdo highlighted the impact of his mentor’s example as a brilliant host and people person in the golf industry. McMurdo expressed confidence in leaving JA The Resort in capable hands, noting exciting initiatives for the future, such as new plans for a Sports Center at the resort. As he prepares for his move back to the UK, McMurdo emphasized that despite missing Dubai, it was always part of the plan to return to England for his children’s education and family reasons.
Looking ahead to his role as General Manager at Hertfordshire Golf Club, McMurdo noted the strong membership base and growth opportunities available at the club, which features an 18-hole parkland course and a historic 16th-century clubhouse. He expressed excitement about the project and the owners’ commitment to investing in the property. Despite leaving Dubai, McMurdo looks forward to spending more time with family and supporting his local football team, Wycombe Wanderers FC. He thanked Dubai for allowing him to be part of the city’s and golf industry’s growth and expressed hope of returning in the future.
