Son Heung-min’s family members, his father Son Woong-jung and brother Son Heung-yun, have been fined in a child abuse case in South Korea. The incident took place at a football academy run by Son Woong-jung, where his elder son Son Heung-yun was a coach. Along with another coach, they were accused of physically and verbally abusing a 12-year-old student. The student’s family claimed that the coach hit him with a corner flag during training, resulting in injuries that required weeks of treatment.

The prosecutors in South Korea have fined Son Woong-jung, Son Heung-yun, and the coach based on the Child Welfare Act and Child Abuse Punishment Act. They have also been ordered to undertake child abuse treatment programs. The incident was reported in April, and Son Woong-jung, being a public figure in South Korea, has authored a best-selling memoir detailing his son’s journey to becoming one of the best strikers in the English Premier League.

The student, identified as Kim, reported that he was subjected to foul language just weeks after joining the academy in November. Despite the claims made by the student and his family, Son senior denied that the incident amounted to physical abuse, stating that it was part of fitness training. Son Heung-yun, in a 2019 interview with AFP, mentioned that he and Son Heung-min were often hit by their father during training sessions, which was considered normal back then.

Son Heung-min, who is known for his skills on the football field, celebrated scoring the team’s fourth goal during the English Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Everton in August 2024. The South Korean striker has gained popularity for his performance in the league and is a key player for Tottenham Hotspur. Son Heung-min’s family’s involvement in the child abuse case has raised concerns and brought attention to the issue of child welfare in South Korea.

The fines imposed on Son Heung-min’s father and brother highlight the importance of addressing child abuse and ensuring the safety of students in sports academies. It is crucial for authorities to enforce strict regulations to protect children from any form of abuse or mistreatment. The incident serves as a reminder for parents, coaches, and academy staff to prioritize the well-being and protection of young athletes.

In conclusion, the child abuse case involving Son Heung-min’s family members has sparked a debate on the treatment of students in sports academies. While Son Heung-min continues to excel in his football career, the incident sheds light on the need for proper child welfare measures and accountability in such establishments. It is essential for all individuals involved in youth sports to uphold ethical standards and provide a safe environment for young athletes to thrive and succeed.
