Raducanu withdraws from French Open qualifying to focus on grass court training

Former US Open winner Emma Raducanu is unlikely to compete in the French Open at Roland Garros after withdrawing from the qualifying tournament this week. Despite being a third alternate for the main draw, Raducanu did not appear among the qualifiers listed on the Roland Garros website. The 21-year-old Briton, currently ranked 212 in the world, won the US Open title in 2021 but has since been plagued by injury problems. Her only appearance on the red clay in Paris was in 2022 when she lost in the second round, and she did not receive a wild card for this year’s edition.
Raducanu expressed her disappointment in missing the French Open, stating that she will focus on maintaining her health and preparing for the grass and hard court seasons ahead. After reaching the quarter-finals in Stuttgart last month, where she lost to world number one Iga Swiatek, Raducanu suffered a first-round loss at the Madrid Open to world No 82 Lourdes Carle. Following that defeat, she admitted to feeling “mentally and emotionally exhausted”. The French Open main tournament is set to begin in May, with Raducanu’s absence leaving a gap in the competition.
Despite her recent setbacks, Raducanu remains determined to bounce back and compete at the highest level. She emphasized the importance of laying foundations for future success and maintaining a healthy approach to her training and preparation. With the support of her team, Raducanu is optimistic about her prospects for the rest of the year. While her withdrawal from the French Open may be disappointing, it is seen as a strategic decision to ensure her long-term fitness and well-being.
