Qatar’s football journey in 2024 was nothing short of eventful, filled with triumphs, accolades, and farewells. The year began with uncertainty as the defending Asian Cup champions faced the challenge of retaining their title. A change in coaching staff added unpredictability, but Qatar quickly turned the tide with a flawless run in the prestigious tournament, reminiscent of their 2019 triumph. Led by Akram Afif, Qatar secured their second consecutive Asian Cup title with a 3-1 victory over Jordan in the final, marking their 14th consecutive win in the competition.

In October, Afif made history by becoming the first Qatari player to win the Asian Player of the Year award for the second time. His stellar performances for both the national team and Al Sadd, where he helped secure a domestic double, earned him the prestigious accolade. Meanwhile, veteran forward Al Haydos bid farewell to international football, retiring as Qatar’s most capped player after a successful 16-year career that saw him lift the Asian Cup trophy twice.

Despite their successes in the Asian Cup and strong showings in the FIFA rankings, Qatar faced challenges in the World Cup qualifiers. Struggling in the third qualifying round, the team sought to secure direct qualification for the World Cup for the first time since 2022. A change in coaching staff saw Luis Garcia take the reins, with Qatar aiming to rebound strongly in the remaining qualifying matches. The team’s performance in 2024 ended with a mix of victories and losses, providing valuable experience to the young talents in the squad.

Looking ahead to 2025, Qatar’s national team faces a tough road to the World Cup. With crucial matches on the horizon, including a showdown against North Korea in March, the team will need to regroup and refocus to secure their spot in the tournament. Despite recent challenges, Qatar’s football journey in 2024 showcased their resilience, determination, and potential on the international stage. As they continue their quest for World Cup qualification, the team will draw on past successes and lessons learned to write the next chapter in their footballing history.
