The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) in collaboration with the Qatar Winter Sports Committee (QWSC) recently celebrated International Olympic Day 2024 in Doha. This event, which is celebrated on June 23 each year, marks the founding of the International Olympic Committee in 1894. To commemorate this special day, the QOC and QWSC organized various winter sports events for men and women of all ages at the Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiyah Arena. Figure Skating, Free Skate, Ice Hockey, Short Speed Skating, and Curling were among the popular sports showcased at the event.
Talented ice skaters and amateurs from the Qatar community displayed their high technical skills during the Olympic Day event, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees and guests. The event attracted a large turnout from society individuals who enjoyed memorable moments while learning more about the values and history of the Olympic movement. The event also highlighted the significant role of sports in promoting messages of peace, love, and unity among nations. Guests from Palestine also attended the Olympic Day event, in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development and Family, and were impressed by the event’s objectives and the spirit of sportsmanship that prevailed.
During the event, the QWSC Secretary-General, Hassan Hassam Al Hababi, paid tribute to the late Qatar Ice Hockey star, Thawab Al-Subaie, by honoring him with a memorial shield. The shield was received by Al-Subaie’s mother and brother, commemorating his contributions to the sports community in Qatar. The Qatar Olympic Committee aims to use events like the Olympic Day celebration to encourage various segments of society to adopt healthy lifestyles, promote the values and principles of the Olympic movement, and raise awareness about the importance of sports both in Qatar and globally.
