South Africa’s Anrich Nortje put on a stunning display of fast bowling, taking four wickets for just seven runs as Sri Lanka was dismissed for a record low score of 77 in their ICC men’s Twenty20 World Cup 2024 match in New York. Nortje’s exceptional performance helped South Africa secure a six-wicket victory in their tournament opener. Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj also played key roles in restricting Sri Lanka’s batting line-up.

Despite the low target, South Africa faced their own challenges during the chase, losing early wickets and struggling to find their footing on a difficult pitch. Opener Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen steadied the innings, with Klaasen hitting a crucial six and a four to guide South Africa to victory with 26 balls to spare. The win marked a strong start for South Africa in the T20 World Cup.

South Africa’s fast bowlers, including Ottneil Baartman and Nortje, were instrumental in dismantling Sri Lanka’s batting order. Baartman made an immediate impact with a wicket off his first ball, while Nortje continued to wreak havoc with key dismissals. Maharaj also played a pivotal role in taking crucial wickets, contributing to Sri Lanka’s collapse and eventual low total.

Sri Lanka’s decision to bat first backfired as they struggled against South Africa’s bowling attack. Only a few batsmen managed to reach double figures, with captain Wanindu Hasaranga and Angelo Mathews showing some resistance. However, with a lack of significant partnerships, Sri Lanka crumbled under pressure and were bowled out for 77.

The match highlighted the importance of strong bowling performances in T20 cricket, with Nortje’s exceptional figures setting a new record for the Proteas at a T20 World Cup. South Africa’s victory showcased their depth in both batting and bowling departments, setting a positive tone for their campaign in the tournament. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will need to regroup and strategize for the upcoming matches to bounce back from this defeat.
