The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has plans to introduce an “e-sport Olympic Games” as a separate event from the traditional Olympic Games. IOC president Thomas Bach made this announcement during the executive board meeting in Lausanne. The proposal for the new competition will be voted on at a general assembly in Paris, just before the start of the summer Olympics. Details about the frequency of the event and which sports will be included have not been disclosed yet, but the IOC is in advanced discussions with a potential host.

In an effort to appeal to a younger audience while maintaining Olympic tradition, the IOC conducted an initial “Olympic e-sport week” in Singapore in June 2023. This event featured ten mixed-gender category events, showcasing the growing popularity and diversity of e-sports. Additionally, an “e-sport commission” was established last October, with Frenchman David Lappartient, president of the international cycling union (UCI), as its chair. The goal of the commission is to explore the possibility of a dedicated e-sport competition.

IOC president Thomas Bach emphasized that e-sports would not be integrated into the traditional Olympics, stating that the organization’s values are non-negotiable. However, the creation of Olympic Esports Games signifies a significant advancement and a nod to the digital revolution. The IOC’s commitment to keeping e-sports separate from the traditional Olympic Games is evident in the decision to establish a new specialized structure within the IOC specifically for this purpose.

While e-sports will have its place in the Olympic Games, the international federations currently involved in electronic versions of their sports, as well as the national Olympic committees that include e-sports in their activities, may have the opportunity to be associated with the new Games. This strategic move highlights the IOC’s recognition of the growing popularity and impact of e-sports on a global scale.

The IOC’s decision to launch an “e-sport Olympic Games” reflects a shift towards embracing new trends and reaching out to a wider audience. The inclusion of e-sports in the Olympic movement demonstrates a willingness to adapt to changing times and cater to the interests of younger generations. By creating a separate platform for e-sports within the IOC, the organization is showing a commitment to innovation and staying relevant in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Overall, the introduction of Olympic Esports Games marks a significant milestone for the IOC and the world of e-sports. This new venture is set to bring together athletes and fans from around the world, showcasing the excitement and competitiveness of electronic sports on a global stage. As the IOC continues to explore new opportunities and engage with emerging trends, the future of e-sports in the Olympic movement looks promising, offering a unique blend of tradition and innovation for athletes and audiences alike.
