France secured a spot in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024 with a 1-0 victory over Belgium courtesy of a late own goal from Jan Vertonghen. France dominated the match but struggled to find the back of the net until substitute Randal Kolo Muani’s shot deflected off Vertonghen and past the Belgian goalkeeper. Despite their lack of goals from open play, France’s solid defense, having conceded only one goal so far, has been a key factor in their success in the tournament.

Both France and Belgium were seeking revenge in this match, with Belgium looking to avenge their defeat to France in the 2018 World Cup semifinals, while France aimed to make up for their early exit in the Euros three years ago. The French team, considered pre-tournament favorites, had a slow start in the group stage, but managed to secure their spot in the quarterfinals with the win over Belgium. The broken nose suffered by Kylian Mbappe in the opening game and the inconsistent form of Antoine Griezmann have been challenges for the French team.

Belgium, on the other hand, made changes to their lineup in an attempt to provide more attacking threat in support of Romelu Lukaku, but their defensive approach limited the number of chances in the match. Despite Belgium’s efforts, it was France who found the breakthrough with the own goal from Vertonghen. The tense encounter highlighted the defensive strengths of both teams, with France’s back line standing out against Belgium’s attacking threats.

The match saw chances for both teams, with France upping their game in the second half and Belgium creating some dangerous opportunities as well. However, it was a defensive mistake from William Saliba that almost led to a goal for Belgium, only to be denied by a brilliant block from Theo Hernandez. With only one goal deciding the outcome, France managed to secure the victory late in the game, setting up a quarterfinal clash in Hamburg as they continue their pursuit of a third European championship.

In conclusion, France’s victory over Belgium in the Euro 2024 round of 16 showcased their defensive solidity and ability to grind out results, despite their struggles in front of goal. The French team will be looking to build on this performance as they progress to the quarterfinals, while Belgium will be disappointed with their early exit. The match highlighted the importance of defensive organization and the impact of key moments in deciding the outcome of high-stakes encounters in international tournaments.
