Palestinian lightweight boxer Waseem Abu Sal is gearing up to make history as the first Palestinian boxer to participate in the Olympics after receiving a wildcard spot to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympic games. Despite facing challenges due to travel restrictions between the occupied West Bank and Gaza, Abu Sal remains focused on his dream of delivering the first-ever Olympic medal for the Palestinians. With his Cairo-based coach, Ahmad Harara, unable to travel to him, Abu Sal receives his training schedule via text messages and trains under the guidance of coach Nader Jayousi in Ramallah.

Abu Sal’s training routine is unconventional, with his coach unable to be physically present due to Israeli travel restrictions. Harara, based in Gaza, oversees Abu Sal’s training remotely, communicating through text messages while providing daily training schedules. The political reality of the West Bank, marked by Israeli army checkpoints, further complicates Abu Sal’s training, as it poses challenges for travel and limits access to sparring partners of similar weight classes. Despite these hurdles, Abu Sal remains determined to succeed at the Olympics.

The Palestine Olympic Committee, although lacking statehood, ensures representation for Palestinian athletes at the international level, including the Olympics. Abu Sal’s wildcard entry allows him to compete in Paris, where he will be among seven athletes representing Palestine. With limited opportunities for training and competition within the country, Abu Sal faces additional obstacles, such as visa denials for Palestinian passport holders when traveling abroad. Despite these challenges, Abu Sal remains committed to his training regimen and is determined to give his best at the Olympics.

As Abu Sal continues his preparations for the Olympics, his mentor, Nader Jayousi, emphasizes the importance of having access to high-quality training partners to sharpen Abu Sal’s skills. The lack of elite boxers in Palestine poses a challenge for Abu Sal, but he remains focused on his goal of winning a medal at the upcoming games. Training alongside other promising young boxers under Jayousi’s guidance, Abu Sal finds motivation in the support of his coach and fellow athletes. With the Olympics drawing near, Abu Sal’s determination to train rigorously and give his all in the ring is unwavering.

For Abu Sal, competing in the Olympics represents a lifelong dream that he has dedicated years of hard work and perseverance to achieve. Despite the limitations imposed by the political situation in the region, Abu Sal’s passion for boxing and representing Palestine on the international stage fuels his ambition to succeed. As he prepares to make history as the first Palestinian boxer at the Olympics, Abu Sal’s story serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes in Palestine and beyond. With the support of his coaches, teammates, and fellow Palestinians, Abu Sal is determined to make his mark at the 2024 Paris Olympic games and bring home a medal for his homeland.
