The Football Association is on the hunt for a new England manager after Gareth Southgate’s resignation following England’s Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain. With a focus on finding a manager capable of leading the team to victory in a major tournament, the FA has identified a number of candidates for the role. While some bookmakers’ favorites include Eddie Howe and Mauricio Pochettino, the FA has stressed that the process is open to anyone who meets their criteria.

The job profile released by the FA outlines the qualities required in the next England manager, emphasizing the need for inspiring leadership, strong relationships with clubs, and a track record of delivering results in the Premier League and international competitions. The successful candidate must also promote equality, diversity, and inclusion, reflecting the FA’s commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive environment within the team.

Sarina Wiegman, the current coach of England Women, has been linked with replacing Southgate, thanks to her success leading the team to victory at the Women’s European Championship in 2022. The FA has set August 2 as the closing date for applications, with England’s first match of the new season scheduled for a Nations League clash with the Republic of Ireland on September 7.

Southgate’s eight-year reign saw him praised for restoring England’s reputation but criticized for failing to secure a major trophy. The next England manager faces the challenge of leading a squad packed with world-class talent to victory in a major tournament, a feat that has proved elusive for the national team since their 1966 World Cup triumph.

As the FA embarks on their selection process, the focus is on finding an exceptional leader who is highly resilient and comfortable in a high-profile role with intense public scrutiny. With strong criteria in place, the FA is committed to open recruitment processes within the football industry, welcoming applications from everyone who meets the requirements.

In the coming weeks, as the FA reviews applications and interviews potential candidates, the football world will be watching closely to see who will take on the challenge of leading the England senior men’s team to future success. With the ambition of consistently ranking as one of the top teams in the world, the next England manager will have big shoes to fill as they step into the spotlight and embark on a new era for English football.
