England Test captain Ben Stokes recently expressed his willingness to return to the white-ball setup under new coach Brendon McCullum. Despite the lack of conversations about his comeback to the limited-overs squads, Stokes mentioned that he would not hesitate to join if asked. McCullum’s appointment as head coach across all formats followed a two-year period of separate coaches for the white and red-ball teams, with Matthew Mott’s departure as the limited-overs coach in July. The New Zealander will lead the limited-overs sides during England’s upcoming tour of India in January.

Ben Stokes has been an integral part of the Test squad since McCullum took charge in May 2022, although he has not been a regular player in England’s white-ball teams. Stokes retired from one-day internationals before making a return for last year’s ODI World Cup, with his last Twenty20 international appearance in the World Cup final in November 2022. Despite his success in white-ball cricket, Stokes stated that he is content with his achievements and would not be disappointed if he doesn’t get the call-up. He mentioned that he has not discussed his return with McCullum yet.

Currently sidelined due to a hamstring injury sustained while playing for Northern Superchargers in The Hundred last month, Stokes mentioned that his rehabilitation is progressing well. He is set to undergo a scan to assess his recovery process. Stokes also highlighted the importance of ensuring all aspects of his body are in top condition, not just his hamstring, to prevent further damage. The 33-year-old all-rounder is focused on returning to full fitness to resume his cricketing duties.

Stokes’ potential return to the white-ball setup under McCullum’s guidance could provide a boost to England’s limited-overs teams. His experience and versatility in both batting and bowling make him a valuable asset to the squad. As the team prepares to face challenging opponents like India, Stokes’ presence could significantly impact their performance. McCullum’s coaching style and strategic approach could also benefit from Stokes’ involvement, creating a dynamic combination for success in limited-overs cricket.

The upcoming tour of India will be a crucial test for England’s limited-overs squads under McCullum’s leadership. With a focus on building a cohesive team and enhancing their performance in white-ball cricket, the appointment of a new coach signals a fresh start for the players. Stokes’ potential return could add depth and strength to the squad, providing them with a competitive edge against tough opposition. As England prepares for a series of challenging matches, the team will need to adapt quickly to McCullum’s coaching methods and harness Stokes’ skills on the field.

In conclusion, Ben Stokes’ willingness to return to England’s white-ball setup under Brendon McCullum’s guidance reflects his commitment to contributing to the team’s success. Despite his injury setbacks, Stokes remains focused on making a strong comeback and regaining his form in limited-overs cricket. As England prepares for upcoming challenges, including the tour of India, Stokes’ potential return could play a significant role in shaping the team’s performance. With McCullum at the helm and Stokes’ experience in the mix, England’s limited-overs squads have the potential to achieve success and make a mark in international cricket.
