The sudden and tragic passing of Ahmed Refaat, former international teammate of Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, has left the football community in mourning. The 31-year-old midfielder, who had spent a season on loan with Al Wahda in the UAE Pro League, died after suffering sudden medical complications. Modern Sport Club, Refaat’s former club, announced his death on Facebook, expressing their condolences to his family and fans of Egyptian football.

In March of this year, Refaat had suffered a heart attack on-pitch during a match, where he had stopped breathing for more than an hour. Despite his initial condition, he was rushed to the hospital and remained in intensive care for close to two weeks. It was reported that Salah had offered to arrange a private plane to transport Refaat to London for specialized treatment.

During his loan spell with Al Wahda, Refaat made 10 appearances, scoring two goals and providing three assists. Prior to that, he had spent four successful seasons with Zamalek in Egypt, winning the Egypt Cup and the Egyptian Super Cup. Refaat had also represented Egypt at the youth level before making his senior debut and earning seven caps for the national team.

The football world has seen several incidents of players suffering cardiac events on the pitch, with high-profile cases such as Denmark’s Christian Eriksen during the Euros in 2021 and Tom Lockyer in the English Premier League in 2023. These tragic events serve as a reminder of the importance of player welfare and the need for increased awareness and preventive measures in sports.

The untimely death of Ahmed Refaat has sent shockwaves through the football community, with many expressing their condolences and memories of the talented midfielder. His passing serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the unpredictable nature of health complications, especially in the world of professional sports. As fans and players mourn the loss of a talented athlete, they are also united in their support for his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

The legacy of Ahmed Refaat will live on through his achievements on the pitch and the impact he had on those who knew him. His time with Al Wahda and Zamalek showcased his talent and dedication to the sport, leaving a lasting impression on those he played with and against. As the football community mourns his loss, they also celebrate the positive influence he had on the game and the memories he created during his career.

In remembrance of Ahmed Refaat, fans, players, and clubs come together to honor his memory and pay tribute to his contributions to the sport. His passing serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with professional athletics and the importance of prioritizing player health and safety. As the football world reflects on his life and career, they also strive to learn from his passing and take steps to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
