Maya Joint, an Australian tennis player, recently secured her place in the second round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, guaranteeing her the biggest tennis payday of her career. However, as a student athlete committed to pursuing a psychology degree at the University of Texas, she faces uncertainties about how much of the potential $140,000 prize money she can keep. According to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules, student athletes can accept prize money up to $10,000 per year, with additional money designated for “actual and necessary expenses”.

Joint expressed her confusion over the rules governing prize money for college athletes, stating that while they can accept tournament money, they must cover expenses until the end of the year. Her friend and fellow player Reese Brantmeier is one of several athletes who have sued the NCAA over this issue. Despite the complexities of the regulations, Joint remains determined to navigate the situation with the help of her mother and the Texas Compliance Office, as she continues her pursuit of a college education.

Despite the opportunity presented by her tennis success, Joint remains committed to her decision to attend college, even if it means delaying the start of her course. She acknowledges that reaching this level in tennis was unexpected and plans to make a choice between pursuing a professional career or continuing her education. Regardless of her decision, Joint recognizes the importance of maintaining a scholarship spot if she chooses to go to college or return on scholarship if she turns professional in the future.

As she prepares for her next match with American player Madison Keys, Joint reflects on the journey that brought her to this point and the decisions she faces regarding her future in the sport. With her rankings expected to rise significantly after her current run in qualifying, she remains focused on her long-term goals of both education and tennis success. The support of her family, school, and tennis community will play a crucial role in helping her navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in her career.
