Argentina’s forward Lionel Messi scored the second goal in a 2-0 victory over Canada in the Conmebol 2024 Copa America tournament semi-final. With this win, Argentina has secured a spot in the final where they will look to secure their third consecutive major title. The defending champions will face either Uruguay or Colombia in what promises to be an exciting final in Miami.

Messi, who scored his first goal of the tournament, praised his team’s efforts, stating that it is a crazy achievement for them to reach the final once again. The 37-year-old is relishing the opportunity to compete for the championship and is enjoying the last battles of his career. Canada, led by American coach Marsch, put up a valiant effort in their first appearance at the Copa America but were ultimately outplayed by Argentina.

Argentina displayed their best performance of the tournament in front of a packed crowd at MetLife Stadium, showcasing their skill and dominance on the field. Led by Messi, Angel Di Maria, and Rodrigo De Paul, Argentina’s attacking trio created countless chances and put pressure on Canada’s defense throughout the match. De Paul’s assist to Enzo Fernandez, who then set up Messi for the second goal, highlighted Argentina’s cohesive and creative play.

Despite an early chance for Canada’s Shaffelburg, Argentina quickly gained control of the game and never looked back. Marsch acknowledged that his team appeared fatigued, attributing their struggles to the physical demands of the tournament. Argentina’s strong build-up play and defensive organization reflected the confidence instilled by coach Lionel Scaloni. The team’s balance of structure and creativity has been key to their success in the tournament.

With a two-goal lead, Argentina comfortably defended their advantage and limited Canada’s attacking opportunities. Substitute Oluwaseyi provided a late threat for Canada, but Argentina’s goalkeeper Martinez was able to secure the victory. The win puts Argentina within reach of a record 16th Copa America title, further solidifying their status as one of the top teams in South America. As fans eagerly anticipate the final, Argentina will aim to continue their winning streak and maintain their championship form.
