MMA fans have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming 2024 IMMAF Youth Championships, with 850 fighters from 45 countries set to compete in Abu Dhabi from August 6 to 10. Split across three age groups, these young fighters, including around 50 Emiratis, will be battling it out in five steel cages at the Mubadala Arena. According to Kerrith Brown, president of IMMAF, this event is the largest in the organization’s history, showcasing the global growth of mixed martial arts.
Brown also acknowledged the support from the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince, highlighting the development and dedication of the UAE Mixed Martial Arts Federation and UAE Jiu-Jitsu. Mohamed Dalmouj Al Dhaheri, chairman of the UAE MMA Committee, noted a significant 50% increase in athlete and country participation compared to previous editions. This growth reflects the rising popularity and interest in MMA among young fighters and countries worldwide.
Mohammed Jassim Al Hosani from the UAE MMA Committee emphasized the safety of the young fighters in the competition, stating that headshots and punches to the face will not be allowed. Instead, the competition will focus on striking to the body and grappling techniques. Al Hosani mentioned that over 50 young Emirati fighters are currently training in Tajikistan, showing the dedication and preparation of the local athletes for the tournament.
With over 51 Emiratis registered for the championship, there is a sense of excitement and anticipation among the participants. This event marks a significant milestone in MMA, with the largest number of countries and participants gathered in one place, competing in five cages simultaneously. Brown also mentioned the launch of a campaign called ‘IMMAF Road to Recognition’ to gain recognition from the International Olympic Committee, demonstrating the organization’s long-standing efforts to establish itself as a global authority in mixed martial arts.
