The American central bank, US Federal Reserve, is expected to cut key interest rates twice this year, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Ben Herzon, Senior US Economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, anticipates rate cuts in September and December, gradually easing policy before further reductions in the second quarter of next year. The Federal Reserve’s next meeting is set for September 17-18, 2024. Recent trends in the US economy, including a steepening unemployment rate, declining job openings rate, and slowing wage inflation, are expected to prompt the Federal Reserve to take action.

S&P Global Market Intelligence forecasts 2.6% GDP growth in the US this year, followed by 1.8% growth next year. This projection remains unchanged from last month’s forecast for the current year but shows a slight increase for the following year. US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has indicated the need for interest rate cuts to align with inflation targets. Powell stated during the Jackson Hole Symposium that “the time has come for policy to adjust,” without specifying the extent of the anticipated rate cut. The US central bank had raised interest rates significantly in response to high inflation during the COVID-19 pandemic but has not made any changes since July 2023.

The US monetary policy committee had raised the policy rate by 425 basis points in 2022 and an additional 100 basis points in 2023 to address inflation concerns. By holding the policy rate at a restrictive level for over a year, the Federal Reserve aimed to maintain price stability. However, with inflation consistently exceeding the 2% target and tight labor market conditions, there is a need for adjustments to monetary policy. Lowering interest rates can help reduce demand in the economy, consequently aiding in lowering the inflation rate.

Looking ahead, the Federal Reserve is expected to implement interest rate cuts to support economic growth and address inflation concerns. With projections for GDP growth in the US, there is a cautious optimism that these measures will help stabilize the economy. As the central bank navigates the delicate balance between maintaining price stability and supporting growth, the upcoming rate cuts could provide a necessary boost to the US economy. Stay tuned for updates on the Federal Reserve’s decisions and their impact on the US financial landscape.

In conclusion, the US Federal Reserve is expected to cut key interest rates twice this year in response to economic conditions, with potential adjustments in the coming year. By easing policy gradually, the Federal Reserve aims to address inflation concerns while supporting economic growth. With projections for GDP growth and recent trends in the US economy, these anticipated rate cuts could have a significant impact on the financial landscape. Stay informed on developments from the Federal Reserve and how they may affect the US economy in the months ahead.
