Gareth Southgate’s resignation as England manager has sparked speculation about his replacement after facing criticism over his picks and tactics during Euro 2024. Southgate announced his resignation following England’s loss to Spain in the final, stating that it was time for a new chapter. During his tenure, Southgate led England to their first final since 1966 at Euro 2021 and back-to-back Euro finals this year. Despite reaching fourth place in the 2018 World Cup and making history with England’s longest unbeaten run at the Euros, Southgate ultimately failed to bring home a trophy.

Southgate’s departure has left a void in the England national team, with several names being circulated as potential replacements. Some of the top contenders include former Chelsea managers Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, and Thomas Tuchel, as well as current Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and England U21 coach Lee Carsley. According to Betfair, Potter is the frontrunner to replace Southgate, followed by Howe, Carsley, Tuchel, and Pochettino. While there have been rumors linking former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to the position, experts view it as unlikely due to his recent break from management and rejection of the US national team.

Southgate’s legacy as England manager includes significant achievements such as leading the team to multiple finals and improving their performance in major tournaments. Prince William praised Southgate for creating a team that stood shoulder to shoulder with the world’s finest, while former FA executive director David Davies hailed him as one of England’s most outstanding managers. Despite the criticism he faced during Euro 2024, Southgate leaves behind a strong foundation for future success and a team that has earned respect both domestically and internationally.

The process of selecting Southgate’s successor will be crucial for England’s future success on the international stage. With no clear front-runner at the moment, the FA will need to carefully consider the candidates and find a manager who can continue the progress made under Southgate. The new manager will inherit a talented squad with high expectations, including world-class players like Jude Bellingham, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Phil Foden. The challenge will be to build on Southgate’s legacy and take England to new heights in future competitions.

As speculation continues to swirl around potential replacements for Southgate, fans and experts alike are eager to see who will take the reins of the England national team. While names like Potter, Howe, and Tuchel are among the favorites, surprises could be in store as the FA considers all options. Regardless of who is chosen as the new England manager, they will have big shoes to fill following Southgate’s successful tenure. The search for Southgate’s successor highlights the importance of strong leadership and vision for the future of English football.
