The men’s football tournament at the Paris Olympics will lack star attractions, as Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi will not be participating. Mbappe, the captain of France and a standout athlete, was not allowed by Real Madrid to play after the Euro 2024 tournament. Similarly, Messi decided not to join the Argentina team for Paris, citing the need to make the right choices at his age. As a result, the most recognizable names in the Olympic squad are Alexandre Lacazette and Michael Olise.

The competition is restricted to players under 23, with a maximum of three overage players allowed per squad. Brazil, the defending champions, failed to qualify for the tournament. However, Argentina, led by coach Javier Mascherano, who has won gold at the Olympics before, aims to secure a sixth straight Latin American victory in men’s football. With players like Julian Alvarez from Manchester City, Argentina has a strong chance to compete for gold.

Spain, winners of the Euros in 2024, are targeting gold after their triumph. They are led by coach Luis de la Fuente, who reached the final at the last Olympics and is aiming for gold this time. Despite missing some key players from the Euros, Spain has young talents like 17-year-old Pau Cubarsi in their squad. Japan, the Asian Under-23 champions, also named a squad without overage players and will compete in Group D alongside Paraguay, Mali, and Israel.

Matches will be played in various cities across France, with the semifinals taking place in Lyon and Marseille, and the final at Paris’s Parc des Princes stadium. The tournament includes teams from different regions aiming to showcase their talent and compete for the prestigious gold medal. Despite the absence of some star players, the men’s football competition promises to be an exciting and competitive event with emerging talents looking to make a mark on the international stage.
