H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, recently attended a panel discussion at Education City in Doha, Qatar. The event focused on laying the foundations for personalized medicine in clinical practice, coinciding with the official launch of Qatar Foundation’s Qatar Precision Health Institute. Dr. Wadha Al Muftah, Senior Director of Qatar Genome at QPHI, moderated the discussion, which brought together experts and leaders from Qatar’s health sector to discuss the country’s efforts in adopting personalized medicine practices, implementing precision health mechanisms in clinical care, and enhancing cooperation and knowledge exchange within the healthcare field.

One of the key participants in the panel discussion was Dr. Salha Bujassoum, Senior Medical Oncologist at Hamad Medical Corporation’s National Centre for Cancer Care and Research. Dr. Bujassoum highlighted the importance of precision health applications in the early detection of cancer, stating that 95% of tumors constitute genetic diseases in affected organs. By collaborating with other scientific institutions such as Qatar Biobank and the Qatar Genome Programme, proactive measures are being taken to treat the disease before it occurs. Those with genetic mutations that cause cancer, identified through Qatar Biobank, are referred to take precautions to prevent the disease before symptoms appear, showcasing that precision health is not only for treatment but also for prevention.

The panel discussion emphasized the significance of bridging gaps between research, practice, and clinical application within the healthcare sector. Collaborative efforts with institutions like Qatar Biobank and the Qatar Genome Programme are enabling healthcare professionals to make advancements in personalized medicine practices. By utilizing precision health mechanisms in clinical care, Qatar is striving to enhance cooperation and knowledge exchange to improve healthcare outcomes for its population. The event was a platform for experts and leaders in the health sector to discuss and share insights on the implementation of personalized medicine practices in clinical settings.
