Madinah mourns the loss of Sheikh Faisal bin Abdulmalik Nouman, a renowned muezzin of the Prophet’s Mosque, who passed away on Monday evening. His funeral prayer was held at the holy site after the Fajr prayer on Tuesday, followed by burial in Jannatul Baqi cemetery. Sheikh Faisal’s voice has been a familiar and comforting presence for worshippers and visitors to Islam’s second holiest mosque for nearly a quarter-century.

The passing of Sheikh Faisal, aged in his 60s, prompted an outpouring of grief and condolences from religious leaders and the wider Muslim community. Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, head of the Presidency for the Religious Affairs at the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, expressed his sorrow on behalf of the imams, muezzins, and staff. Al-Sudais offered prayers for the deceased and his family, acknowledging Sheikh Faisal’s decades of dedicated service.

A Legacy of the Adhan: Remembering Sheikh Faisal Nouman

Sheikh Faisal’s appointment as a muezzin in 1422 AH (2001) marked the continuation of a family tradition deeply rooted in the service of the Prophet’s Mosque. His father, Sheikh Abdulmalik Nouman, began calling the prayer at the mosque at the young age of 14 and continued this role for over 90 years. This lineage of devotion underscores the importance placed on the role of the adhan within Islamic practice.

Family History and Early Life

Born and raised in Madinah, Sheikh Faisal received his higher education at Taibah University. He grew up immersed in the spiritual atmosphere of the city and the traditions surrounding the Prophet’s Mosque. This upbringing undoubtedly shaped his commitment to his future role as a caller to prayer. His dedication mirrored that of his father, who was widely respected for his long and faithful service.

Sheikh Faisal’s tenure as a muezzin spanned nearly 25 years, concluding in 1447 AH (2025). During this time, his melodious and reverent recitation of the adhan became synonymous with the Prophet’s Mosque for millions of worshippers. The adhan, the Islamic call to prayer, is a fundamental pillar of daily life for Muslims worldwide.

The impact of a muezzin extends beyond simply announcing prayer times. Their voice serves as a spiritual reminder and a unifying force for the Muslim community. Sheikh Faisal’s ability to convey reverence and tranquility through his recitation resonated deeply with those who heard him, creating a lasting connection to the holy site.

News of Sheikh Faisal’s passing quickly spread through social media platforms, with countless individuals sharing their memories and expressing their grief. Many described his voice as a source of peace and spiritual upliftment, recalling specific moments when his adhan touched their hearts. This widespread mourning highlights the profound influence he had on the global Muslim community.

Additionally, the Presidency for the Religious Affairs at the Prophet’s Mosque has received condolences from religious scholars and leaders across the Islamic world. These messages emphasize Sheikh Faisal’s contribution to the spiritual atmosphere of the mosque and his dedication to upholding the traditions of the adhan. The loss is felt acutely by those who regularly visit and pray at the mosque.

In contrast to some public figures, Sheikh Faisal maintained a humble and unassuming profile, focusing solely on his religious duties. He was known for his sincerity and devotion, qualities that earned him the respect and admiration of his peers and the wider community. His life exemplified a commitment to serving Islam and upholding its traditions.

Meanwhile, the selection process for a replacement muezzin at the Prophet’s Mosque is expected to begin shortly, according to sources within the Presidency for the Religious Affairs. The appointment will likely prioritize candidates with strong vocal skills, a deep understanding of Islamic principles, and a demonstrated commitment to serving the mosque. The process is anticipated to be thorough and deliberate, reflecting the importance of the role.

The coming weeks will likely see continued tributes to Sheikh Faisal’s life and legacy. It remains to be seen whether a formal memorial service will be held, but the impact of his voice will undoubtedly continue to resonate within the walls of the Prophet’s Mosque for generations to come. The Presidency for the Religious Affairs is expected to announce details regarding any future commemorations.
