Sharjah Police recently announced that sixteen inmates in their Punitive and Correctional Institution converted to Islam in cooperation with the Call and Guidance Centre in Dubai. The inmates cited a deeper understanding of the religion’s values of love, mercy, and tolerance as the reason for their conversion. They also mentioned the positive treatment they received from officials and the religious lectures by specialized imams that helped them understand Islam’s teachings. The goal of the institution is to reintegrate inmates into society positively after their sentences end, contribute to correcting their behavior, and reduce recidivism rates.

Colonel Abdullah Rashid Alai Al Naqbi, Acting Director of the Punitive and Correctional Institution, emphasized the importance of the institution’s approach in helping inmates regain normal lives and correcting their behavior. Regardless of inmates’ religions or beliefs, the institution aims to rehabilitate them psychologically and socially. The positive environment and support provided to inmates contribute to their successful reintegration into society. The ultimate goal is to ensure that the inmates leave the institution with the necessary tools and skills to lead productive lives and avoid falling back into criminal behavior.

The religious lectures conducted by specialized imams play a crucial role in educating inmates about Islam’s teachings and principles. These lectures help inmates gain a deeper appreciation for the religion and encourage them to embrace its values of love, mercy, and tolerance. The positive impact of these lectures is evident in the increasing number of inmates who have chosen to convert to Islam during their time in the institution. The supportive environment created by the officials and staff also plays a vital role in facilitating the inmates’ religious journey and overall rehabilitation process.

Colonel Abdullah Rashid Alai Al Naqbi highlighted the institution’s commitment to providing comprehensive rehabilitation services to inmates regardless of their religious background. The institution’s focus on psychological and social rehabilitation ensures that all inmates receive the necessary support to overcome their past behaviors and make positive changes in their lives. By offering a holistic approach to rehabilitation, the institution aims to address the root causes of criminal behavior and equip inmates with the skills and resources needed to lead law-abiding lives upon their release.

The successful conversion of sixteen inmates to Islam within the first nine months of 2024 is a testament to the effectiveness of the institution’s rehabilitation programs and initiatives. The inmates’ positive experiences with the religious lectures, specialized imams, and overall supportive environment have contributed to their decision to embrace Islam. These conversions not only reflect the inmates’ personal spiritual journeys but also signify the positive impact of the institution’s efforts in promoting faith-based rehabilitation and reintegration strategies. By embracing religious teachings and principles, the inmates are taking steps towards personal growth and transformation.

In conclusion, the conversion of sixteen inmates to Islam in the Sharjah Police’s Punitive and Correctional Institution underscores the importance of faith-based rehabilitation and support services in the criminal justice system. The institution’s commitment to providing comprehensive rehabilitation programs and a supportive environment has resulted in positive outcomes for inmates, including successful conversions to Islam. By prioritizing spiritual growth and personal development, the institution aims to empower inmates to make positive changes in their lives and reintegrate into society as law-abiding citizens. The continued success of these rehabilitation efforts highlights the potential for faith-based initiatives to facilitate meaningful transformations in individuals and contribute to reducing recidivism rates in the long term.
