The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), HE Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, recently met with HE Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and Chairperson of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI). Their discussions focused on cooperation between the GCC General Secretariat and the NHRC, as well as the importance of national human rights institutions in preserving and protecting human rights in the GCC countries.

During the meeting, both parties emphasized the significant role that national human rights institutions play in promoting human rights within the GCC region. They also highlighted the need for joint GCC efforts in this field, in alignment with the directives of the leaders of the GCC countries. The goal is to provide support and assistance for the well-being and advancement of the people in the GCC countries.

One of the key topics of discussion was the proposal to organize exhibitions on human rights in Islamic culture and human rights in sports at the headquarters of the GCC General Secretariat. Additionally, plans were made to hold the second forum for GCC human rights institutions in Qatar in December. These initiatives aim to raise awareness and promote dialogue on human rights issues within the GCC.

The meeting also addressed the importance of coordinating activities between the NHRC and the GCC. They discussed the development of unified guiding documents on human rights-related issues, which could serve as a basis for the establishment of unified laws within the GCC in the future. This strategic approach is crucial for ensuring consistency and effectiveness in promoting and protecting human rights across the region.

Overall, the meeting between HE Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi and HE Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah highlighted the commitment of the GCC General Secretariat and the NHRC to advancing human rights within the GCC countries. By collaborating and fostering partnerships, they aim to strengthen the framework for human rights protection and promotion, in accordance with international standards and the values of the GCC leaders. Through these efforts, the GCC countries can work towards enhancing the well-being and prosperity of their populations.
