Scottish ‘Tartan Army’ in Munich for Euros opener with Kilts and bagpipes

Scotland’s national soccer team fans, known as the Tartan Army, brought an incredible atmosphere to Munich ahead of their Euro 2024 clash against Germany. Chanting “no Scotland, no party”, the fans travelled from far and wide to support their team. Some fans, like Stuart Webster from Western Australia, traveled thousands of miles to be there, showing their unwavering dedication to the team. The fans gathered in central Munich, singing and playing football as they eagerly awaited the match. Despite many not having tickets to the game, they were determined to soak up the experience.

Fans from all over Scotland and beyond came together in Munich, with hopes of a good result against Germany to help Scotland qualify for the knockout rounds, a milestone the team has never achieved before. The fans remained optimistic, even though they knew the challenge ahead. For Robert Stephen, a draw would be a reason to celebrate. The excitement was palpable as fans enjoyed the festive atmosphere in Munich, gathering with friends and family for what promised to be an unforgettable match.

For many fans, the journey to Munich was a long and arduous one. Mareth Wilson and her family took an overnight ferry to the Netherlands before boarding a train to complete their journey. Despite feeling seasick during the ferry ride, Wilson remained determined to support her team. The family planned to watch the game on a big screen in the fan zone, where up to 25,000 fans could gather to cheer on their respective teams. The friendly rivalry between the Scottish and German fans added to the excitement of the occasion.

In Munich, the Scottish fans were met with some German supporters who were equally excited for the opening game of the tournament. Corinna Hasken and Manuel Pieper, who travelled from northwest Germany, were looking forward to the match. Pieper was confident of a 2-0 win for Germany, setting high expectations for the home team. The historic setting of Munich’s Olympic Park added to the charm of the occasion, with the fans soaking in the atmosphere of the tournament. The anticipation and excitement were building as both teams prepared to face off in what promised to be an unforgettable match.
