With the advancement of technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an essential tool in various sectors globally, with Saudi Arabia showing a significant interest in its adoption. A recent survey by Oliver Wyman revealed that 68 per cent of workers in Saudi Arabia use generative AI weekly, surpassing the global average of 55 per cent. Additionally, 93 per cent of Saudis consider AI as a crucial tool at work, highlighting the enthusiasm for AI in the region.

The commitment to AI in Saudi Arabia extends beyond the individual level to government initiatives. The region, along with other GCC countries like the UAE, is leading in AI adoption, positioning itself for economic and societal gain. Saudi Arabia’s ambitious AI investment strategy, with plans to invest $40 billion in AI, reflects the country’s determination to become a global AI leader. A potential partnership with Silicon Valley’s leading venture capital firms further solidifies Saudi Arabia’s position in the global AI landscape.

Despite the optimism surrounding AI, there are concerns about the pace of adoption and the risks associated with AI development. More than 80 per cent of respondents in the Oliver Wyman survey expressed a desire to utilize AI for various purposes, ranging from healthcare to financial planning. The integration of AI into workplaces faces challenges, with 47 per cent of employees willing to continue using AI tools even if their employers disallow it, emphasizing the need for clear guidelines and ethical considerations.

The potential of generative AI to capture human emotion has sparked interest worldwide, particularly in areas like entertainment and customer service. However, with 50 per cent of AI researchers believing there’s a greater than 10 per cent chance AI could lead to human extinction, the risks of AI development are not overlooked. As societies look to their governments for leadership in education and workforce development to harness AI opportunities ethically, it is crucial to strike a balance between AI’s benefits and risks.

The evolving landscape of AI is transforming various industries, with consumer expectations driving advancements in autonomous transportation. The survey indicates that consumers expect autonomous buses, shuttles, and taxis to become a reality within the next decade, signaling a significant shift in transportation driven by AI. While there is excitement about AI’s potential, concerns remain about responsible AI development and deployment to ensure a safe and ethical transition to an AI-driven future.

As the global community navigates the opportunities and challenges presented by AI, it is essential to adopt balanced approaches that maximize AI’s benefits while mitigating potential risks. With AI poised to revolutionize industries and society, a comprehensive understanding of AI’s dual nature as a driver of innovation and a source of concern is critical for shaping a sustainable future. Saudi Arabia’s proactive stance on AI, coupled with global advancements in technology, underscores the transformative potential of AI in paving the way for a technologically advanced and ethically responsible future.
