Saudi Arabia reaches full self-sufficiency in cantaloupe production

Saudi Arabia has achieved 100% self-sufficiency in cantaloupe production, with annual quantities exceeding 55.4 thousand tons across approximately 2,389 hectares in various regions of the country. The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture revealed that the Riyadh region leads in cantaloupe production with 42,175 tons annually, followed by Al-Qassim with 6,137 tons, Madinah with 2,545 tons, and other regions contributing to the total production. The Harvest Season campaign aims to promote local agricultural products, increase awareness of seasonal fruits, and enhance the marketing system to support farmers and boost their financial returns.

The optimal time to plant cantaloupe in the Riyadh region is from March to the end of April to achieve the best yield possible. The Ministry emphasized the health benefits of cantaloupe, such as protecting against asthma, strengthening the immune system, regulating blood pressure, aiding digestion, and providing essential vitamins. Consuming locally produced fruit during its harvest season ensures maximum nutritional and health benefits for consumers. The Harvest Season campaign aims to introduce various types of local fruits and their availability throughout the year, aligning with the Ministry’s policy to enhance the production and use of local products and raise their quality and safety standards.

The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture highlighted the successful achievement of 100% self-sufficiency in cantaloupe production in Saudi Arabia, with annual quantities exceeding 55.4 thousand tons. The Riyadh region leads in cantaloupe production, followed by Al-Qassim, Madinah, Hail, Najran, Al-Jawf, the Eastern region, and Tabuk. The Harvest Season campaign aims to educate the public about agricultural products, promote seasonal fruits, and improve the local fruit marketing system to support farmers and increase their financial returns.
