Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured a thrilling victory over CR Flamengo in the 2025 FIFA Intercontinental Cup final, winning 2-1 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al-Rayyan, Qatar on Wednesday. Goalkeeper Matvei Safonov proved to be the hero for PSG, making crucial saves to clinch the title and complete a remarkable six-trophy haul for the French champions.

The match, played before a crowd of over 42,000, saw Khvicha Kvaratskhelia open the scoring for PSG in the 38th minute. Flamengo responded with a penalty converted by Jorginho in the 62nd minute, forcing the game into a tense penalty shootout. The result marks PSG’s first Intercontinental Cup title since the competition’s modern iteration began.

PSG Claims 2025 Intercontinental Cup in Dramatic Fashion

The victory caps off an extraordinary year for Luis Enrique’s PSG, adding the Intercontinental Cup to their already impressive collection of trophies including the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Ligue 1, Trophee des Champions, and Coupe de France. They join an exclusive club, becoming only the third team this century to win six trophies in a single year, following Barcelona in 2009 and Bayern Munich in 2020.

The match itself was a closely contested affair. PSG dominated possession for large stretches, with early chances falling to Vitinha and Lee Kang-in. However, Flamengo proved to be a resilient opponent, creating opportunities of their own through Jorge Carrascal and Erick Pulgar. A VAR review denied PSG an early goal from Fabian Ruiz, adding to the drama.

Penalty Shootout Decides the Contest

After a goalless extra time, the match went to penalties. Nicolas De La Cruz and Vitinha successfully converted their spot-kicks, but Safonov quickly emerged as the key figure, denying Saul’s attempt. Ousmane Dembele, brought on as a substitute, unfortunately missed his penalty, sending it over the bar.

Safonov continued his heroics, saving penalties from both Pedro and Leo Pereira. Nuno Mendes’ successful strike put PSG in a commanding position, but Agustin Rossi kept Flamengo’s hopes alive with a save of his own against Bradley Barcola. Ultimately, Safonov’s final save from Luiz Araujo sealed the victory for PSG, sparking jubilant celebrations.

Flamengo, coached by Filipe Luis, can take pride in their performance, having also secured the FIFA Derby of the Americas and FIFA Challenger Cup during their time in Qatar. The Brazilian side demonstrated strong defensive organization and posed a consistent threat on the counter-attack. The FIFA Intercontinental Cup showcased a high level of competition between two of the world’s top clubs.

Vitinha was awarded the Player of the Tournament trophy, recognizing his consistent performances throughout the competition. The midfielder’s contributions were vital to PSG’s success, both in open play and during the crucial penalty shootout. This win solidifies PSG’s position as one of the leading forces in global football.

Looking ahead, PSG will now focus on defending their Ligue 1 title and continuing their pursuit of European dominance. The club’s success in 2025 has raised expectations for the future, and fans will be eager to see if they can maintain this level of performance. The next major international club competition is the Club World Cup in late 2025, where PSG will aim to add another trophy to their cabinet. The continued development of young players like Desire Doue will also be a key factor in PSG’s long-term success.
