Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus emerged victorious in a thrilling match against Victoria Azarenka during the Washington Open, showcasing her skill and resilience on the court. The two-time Australian Open champion fired eight aces and displayed determination in the face of tough competition. Despite a shaky second set, Sabalenka managed to secure a 6-4, 6-4 victory over her Belarusian counterpart, setting the stage for an exciting semi-final at the prestigious tournament.

Sabalenka, who is currently ranked third in the world, expressed her gratitude for the challenging match against Azarenka, acknowledging the fierce battle that ensued. The Belarusian star is focused on improving her performance with each set, aiming to peak at the upcoming US Open. Sabalenka, who suffered from shoulder problems in the past, reassured fans that she is in top form and is determined to maintain her physical fitness to avoid any setbacks in the future.

With her eyes set on a potential US Open title, Sabalenka is keen on facing Czech player Marie Bouzkova in the semi-finals, the two having met previously in Miami. Despite a previous victory for Sabalenka, she acknowledges the tough competition that Bouzkova presents and is prepared for a challenging encounter on the court. Additionally, the women’s semi-final will also feature Spain’s Paula Badosa against American Caroline Dolehide, promising another exciting match-up for tennis fans.

The match between Sabalenka and Azarenka showcased the Belarusian’s dominance, as she improved her head-to-head record to 5-1 against her rival. Despite Azarenka’s formidable skill, Sabalenka’s consistent performance and mental toughness allowed her to secure her fourth consecutive victory over the former world number one. With a strong performance in the quarterfinals, Sabalenka demonstrated her ability to handle pressure and excel in high-stakes situations.

On the men’s side, Frances Tiafoe delivered an impressive performance by defeating top seed Andrey Rublev in a closely contested match. Tiafoe’s hometown support and fighting spirit propelled him to victory as he eliminated the world number eight in straight sets. With a win against Rublev, Tiafoe now faces US fourth seed Sebastian Korda in the semi-finals, setting the stage for an intense battle between two rising stars in the tennis world.

In a surprising turn of events, Canadian wild card Denis Shapovalov was defaulted for unsportsmanlike conduct during a match against US second seed Ben Shelton. While Shelton expressed disappointment at the abrupt end to the match, he maintained sportsmanship and acknowledged the intensity of the competition. As the tournament progresses, fans can expect more thrilling matches and unexpected twists as the players vie for the prestigious Washington Open title.
